Couple of years ago I had a factory insist that I do their beds or loose the contract.
I sold them on 25 tons of landscape stone.
Next year, back to zero mulch.

This part has no bed edging. The grass is starting to intrude. I'll straighten the edge with some roundup this spring. The stone's all 4" deep with underlayment. Either rubber roofing material or landscape fabric, depending on the application. Rubber up against walls etc. Fabric for trees & woody ornamentals. This is a permanent installation.
What you see in the other pic at the top in the center is a flower bed at the base of two pillars. Top left is a mulched shrub bed that "they will maintain" (I'm still spraying the thistles)
I guess mulch has it's place. It just shouldn't be everyplace. These landscapes are difficult and expensive to maintain without designing high maintenance items right in.
Thanks for asking about my job. I guess you could tell I'm as proud as a new daddy!

I put down about 100 yds of mulch last year using a 10 cu. ft. cart that I made a hitch for and tow with my walk-behind. If I had a Finn bark blower, I could probably get as many mulch jobs as I wanted, there seems to be a high demand in my area. I shy away from them now with my current equipment because it takes me too long.

Solo- 150 yards a year. Great off-season work. Mindless work, which is why I'm so good at it.

we put down only 2 yds of mulch this year at our only commercial site and it is only for the islands around the parking lot. All my clients got new mulch late last summer so there wasnt a real need for more till this spring.

I'd say around 250, March is a great time for us. Try to do clean-ups in Feb and March for mulch. At Biz. locations we try to sell a top coat in Oct/Nov as well.

Applied 550 yards last year. The most for us ever! We get a pretty good dollar for layed mulch prices. About $50-$55/yard spread in my areas.

We went through almost 3 trailer truck loads of dark blend and light blend. Bark blowers saves tons of man hrs putting more cash in pockets. All the guys who spread alot of mulch have found its the way to go.

hey
the man from maryland you need to be able to get more money for your mulch
i start at $75yd of mulch and on up from there depending on much clean-up, edging, and how pain in the butt the customer is.
we layed probably around a 100yds of mulch last year.
What are these bark blowers you all are talking about?

i don't see any problems with his price of $50-55 a yard. We buy mulch for $8.00 a yard around here. So $47.00 a yard profit is pretty good if you ask me. (We charge $65.00 a yard)

kerr lawn, the $55 I get for mulch laid out is just it, for the mulch only! I charge my customers $40/man hour for bed clean-ups, another charge for using a bed edger (trench master, etc.). So you see, it can really be more than $80-$100/yard if you work it out that way. My costomers like to know exactly what they are paying for, and I break it up for them. I've been doing it that way for the past 8 years.

paps and prime green your way makes complete sense for your customers
i have to break it up like that sometimes like that which is a pain in the butt
like mulch layed
edge
clean-up
bushes trimmed
etc......
but some of my customers say bryan here is what i want done how much is it gonna cost?
then i just tell them per yard it will be X and all this other stuff is included on that price. Then they can remember that from year to year. These are the people with more money than brains. They don't even think twice about handing me a check for the amount.
As always whatever gets your boat gently down the stream.
what part of maryland are you in?
