I want to plant grass in a shady area. So How many hours per day does grass need? I'm planting creaping red fescue.

A good hour should be enough.

An hour a day? Good thing you're not a farmer.

It needs no sun to start, just warm soil. Once it starts to grow and be green, it needs about 8 hrs a day. Then, as it matures, it needs less.

Buy a seed mix that is listed as "good for shady areas". In SC, that's usually a mix of creeping red fescue, kentucky blue, and some filler seed.

True, one hour is a bare minimum for crf if that. Many parts of my lawn doesn't get any direct sun light and the turf is very thin at best. Areas that get at least an hour are doing ok but I'm not about to cut down more trees for a nicer lawn or to grow crops.
