Just called Home depot and asked if they rented Slit Seeders? He had never heard of it, but said they do rent over seeders. Is that the same thing?

My yard is patchy (1 yr. old builder lawn). I am planning on over seeding with fescue Blue, adding starting fert, and adding some compost or topsoil in the bare spots. I have an irrigation system. Is that enough or should I till up ot aerate as well?

Thanks!

Yes, they are the same thing.
Using the overseeder is doing about the same job as an aerator, so you should be good to go.

Arate ing and then overseeding will give you the best results.

Do you agree with a thin layer of topsoil or compost?

You can if you want, but the areator/slicer will open up the soil so the seed get an optimum amount of air, water, and fertilizer.

What that is, is called "topdressing".
