I need to replace my pillowblock bearing on my pto. On a Grasshopper 721d.
I have taken the Quick disconnect apart and got the balls to fall out. Is it possible to get the yoke off without taking apart the U-joint and using a gear puller? Are these just automotive sized U-Joints or somthing special? I need to know before I order parts in case I break something. What is the quickest and easyist way to remove the yoke?

Is there a set screw or keyway or spline you can see? Usually on pto's on other equipment I have worked on,the set screw [usually a allen head, could be two screws] holds the yoke to the shaft. The locking collar on the pillow block bearing could be the same way. The collar when unlocked wil have to be turned to unlock the shaft to pull it thru. plowking

I have an older Woods that has the drive shaft running underneth. I found it easier to just drop the whole shaft. I removed the pulley on the back and slid the blocks off the back. I replaced both pillowblocks. That was about 6-7 years ago. Keep the new ones greased!

It's way easier to take the whole shaft out. Most of the time those bearings don't slip right off. While you have it apart, you might as well replace both pillow blocks so you don't have to play that game again.

Thanks for the help!!

I did remove the whole shaft and put it in a vise and a few good hits with a hammer and punch it came off. Guess it wasn't rusted on there that bad. Lucky me!! Now waiting for the parts to arrive. On one of the Grasshopper order sites it showed a PTO shield mine didn't have, thats on its way also. To keep the long grass from wrapping around the pto in there. Thats what took my bearing out to much grass got wrapped around the pto up there and jamed it. I didn't stop often enough to clear it out. I have about 4more acres of long grass to cut yet and by the time my parts arrive will have to recut the other 2.

Thanks again for the replys!!!

I replaced mine on my '99 GH. I got the pillow blocks from Northern Tool. I also have a hydrulic press, which makes the job a little easier.

Those pillow blocks are designed to be greased with 1/2 stroke of grease 80-100 hours. If you over grease them you will blow the seals out, then you'll never keep grease in them.
