Hello,
Greeting's. Seems as if my Craftman # 917. 272432, lawn tractor will not engage when the gear shift is put in either reverse or forward. While yhe mower is jacked up, the wheels turn , but you can stop them with your hand.
Any suggestions? The motor is strong a 20 Hp twin ,my next plan of attack is to check the drive pulley belt and the idler pulley? Thanks for any help.

If the wheels turn, you are getting power to the wheels.
Check to see that the tire hubs are keyed to the axle shaft (1/4" square x 2" long key).
If that's missing, all the power in the world won't help you.

Yah if you can see the shafts and try to drive it...watch the shafts...if the shaft is spinning and the wheel isnt moving you have a key issue.
