i have a briggs & stratten intek gold 20 hp single cylinder on a sears yawn tractor.i had a sudden stoppage and every since then when i try to mow when i get to thick grass it dies out. the carb is good and it runs good untill you put a load on it. i took off the bottom pan and look at the governer gears and they are good and the governer looks good . any help would be appreciated.

Man-o-man......Does "sudden stoppage" mean you hit something with the blade ?

If so, Check the flywheel key....

Sudden stoppage of a blade can cause the flywheel key to shear, Not very common on belt drive machines but can happen.

The results of a sheared flywheel key changes ignition timing, When timing changes on these small engines one of the results is exactly how you explained "it runs good untill you put a load on it"......

Am I reading this right. Despite the sudden stoppage the engine would still start up and run?
I would not have gone to the governor first thing.

I'd check the carb was not running weak, also the valves are not leaking, causing it to stall under heavy load.

Could even be float level.

Can you do a compression test?

Good luck Phil

Sounds like possibly there was a piece of trash in the carb that was dislodged while flipping the engine around removing the sump/pan ?

#1 rule, Always check ALL external components/adjustments and eliminate them before opening a engine up.

If one is uncertain how to do so, There are many message boards in which one can receive guidance.

Good to hear it's running as should.....

check the head gasket. on sinfle cylinders it can run fine until load is applied. especially if it blows between push rod chamber and head, then it will smoke alot as well.
