View Full Version : Seed Recommendation
Hi everybody,
I am really having a hard time finding the seed I want and hoping I will find here some help.
I live in South Carolina. My lawn is mix between sun and shade.
I am looking for a light green color , fine, creeping grass.
Most of the seeds I have looked at are dark green and it does not seem there is alot of variates in local stores.
My lawn is waiting on the right seed.
Any help would be appreciated!
Bump for light green grass :waving:

Light green? Maybe a bluegrass? Not sure if it would grow in your area.

Thanks J, I was researching bluegrass and I am afraid to seed only bluegrass for it might not last in the heat of the summer.
The other options that I found that might give the light green I wanted are sod based/no seeds.
I am really starting to give up about the bright color and started to think more about creating a good lawn.
I was thinking to go with a greenview blend but not sure how it is going to be.

This is my first time to do all this stuff, but when it comes to a choice of seed it gets really confusing.

When it comes to grass type, you need to reserch the requirements for the extent of maintaince required to maintain a healthy lawn. Bluegrass is high maintaince, sun,air flow, fert, water.

The Greenview web site tells you everything but what you need to know, the amount of each variety of seed that makes up the mix.

Thanks, I found this on ACE Hardware
20% Charismatic Perennial Ryegrass
25% Champagne Kentucky Bluegrass
20% Pathfinder Red Fescue
25% Exacta Perennial Ryegrass
10% Oxford Fine Fescue
Not sure how good this would be

I use a tall fescue mix, have for years, and love it. Makes a great lawn. Not sure how it would work in your area. Wouldnt something like bermuda grass work best in your area?

Yes Bermuda works here, part of my yard I believe has Bermuda grass and it looks so ugly. What mix did you use?
I am researching now a type of Tall Fescue called Rhizomatous (RTF) Seed, it seems to be the right color for me.

There is A-4 Creeping Bentgrass, it is too expensive though it looks so good. Is it really worth the money?

Choosing a grass seed makes me crazy :dizzy:

First, where in SC are you? Upstate vs. Coastal is vastly different.
I'm in Greenville and I put in an RTF yard from sod several years ago. It did great at first. The long periods of severe heat really weakened it. Brown path has also been a problem forme. I've also had trouble finding RTF seed that I can get to grow. I would call mine a pretty dark green, not the darkest, but still, dark.
I'd go to a nursery and see what they recommend. Looking around on the internet is very risky in finding the grass that will please you.
Good luck,
Jack

The mix I use comes from FS (FarmService) and is called Tuff Lawn. Not sure if you could find it where youre at. Any tall Fesuce mix is good. I did use Jaguar at one time but it is very expensive. I always go with a mix, gives you a variety and all around good lawn.

Hey Jack I also live in Greer, you got to be my neighbor :waving:
Thanks for sharing your experience. It seems that going with a blend might be the best choice in order to overcome problems that might result from whether changes.
Is there any nursery around Greer area?

Thanks J, I think that a mix is what I am going to end up with. Hopefully I will be lucky enough and end up with a good one.
Does your Fescue grow fast? I am not that great lawn care guy and maybe that is why I was looking sometimes for dwarf type of grass. But I am hoping that getting a good result might encourage me to put more effort.

I'm in the Sugar Creek area on the Eastside. Dave Slater at Slater Turf Farm is a good source of info and they grow sod for this area and know what it takes. I've had mixed results with the nursuries in the area, and I've listed them below with my opinion of them:
Lichtenfelt on Anderson Ridge Road is great.
South Pleasantburg Nursery south of Greenville Tech is good.
Underwoods near Haywood Mall is good at times.
I think Landrum Hardware is a decent source for seed. The fellow there knows Dave Slater well and know more about turf than the average hardware store/nursery employee.
Good luck,
Jack

Thanks Jack for the valuable information, I live near Mink Creek. I will make sure to check these sources before taking a decision.
I just called the Greenview/Lebanon customer service about their Sun & Shade Mixture (http://www.greenviewfertilizer.com/store/Sun-Shade-Mixture-P7C5.aspx)and unfortunately I was told it will not survive the heat of the summer and that mostly likely it will end up dead not dormant
Lebanon does not make any mixture or blend for warm seasons, I wonder why? It would be nice if they could.
Any other reputable company provides mixture or blend that can survive the summer other than Scotts?
Is there any cool season mixture that can survive the summer heat, is this possible or it does not exist?
There is some good information about SC grass seeds on this website http://www.outsidepride.com/resources/states/southcarolina.html

Yeah, fescue grows fast. Espically in the spring. Will go dormant in the summer heat, but my yard is all green again now.

Why not centipede?
Thanks ben, I was so close on deciding to go with a variety of Bermudagrass called Princess 77 but from what I read; Fall is not the right time for growing a warm season grasses, and that it would be very risky. I found some information here http://www.bermudagrass.com/info/whentoplant.html and http://www.centipedegrass.com/seeding/seeding2.html
I feel like I am getting closer. I never thought I would enjoy agriculture, but once I spent sometime learning, I think it is has its fun side. :clapping:

Thanks for the feedback, I have been researching Tall Fescue for the last days and it seems to be the right choice.
I checked NTEP.ORG and I picked some of the highly rated seeds that were tested in Griffen, GA which I believe it might be the closet whether to where I live right now.
I picked TAR HEEL II from 2001 National Test http://www.ntep.org/data/tf01/tf01_06-9/tf01ga105t.txt
Justice Tall Fescue from 2006 National Test http://www.ntep.org/data/tf06/tf06_08-1/tf06ga107t.txt
Here is a nice table that compare performances http://www.seedsuperstore.com/ordering/Tall_Fescue_Performance_Characterists.htm
I was thinking to plant both this fall separately and compare the results. If I will end up with both of these fescues I will make sure to bring pictures of the results.
I am just curious about the names of Tall Fescues included in your Tuff Lawn mix?

Im finally getting some rain on my fescue today. Hoepfully it will come up strong. The fescue I put down last year at this time is pretty thick and very green after getting some fertilzer on it about 2 weeks ago. It's a good grass in my opinion.
