OK folks, I need an opinion here. Occasionally I will run across a dead squirrel or rabbit in a yard. I usually just grab a trash bag out of the truck and dispose of the things.

This week, I found three dead cats at one of my accounts. They had been neatly arranged in the front yard. I tried to knock on the door, but they refused to come to the door.

So, I got back in the truck and called them, no answer. I knew they were home. I left a message explaining the situation and telling them that I thought they needed to have someone take a look at the situation.
It is just not a normal thing to have so many dead animals in one place. Especially if they are laid out like that. Plus, I did not feel that it was my responsibility to remove the carcasses at no charge.

The customers did not get back to me until the next day. They were very upset that I did not mow on the scheduled day. I asked if the dead cats had been removed. They said that I had to get rid of them. I told them I would be by to mow when the cats were gone.

Did I blow this one? Any feedback is greatly appreciated

You did everything right. Personally, money or not I'm not removing them, thats their responsibility.

I probably would have called Animal Control and advised them of suspicious animal deaths occuring at the property. Could be a case of animal cruelty for satanic rituals and needs to be stopped.

Always call animal control if you run across a situation like this.

Thanks folks. I know that it is not a satanic thing. I have known this customer for a long time. I thought that it might have been a neighbor or someone else trying to "send her a message". I understand what you are saying about animal control, but, is that my responsibility or the property owers?
Thanks again

regardless animal control should have been called, we called last week on one of ours as a matter of fact. the biggest reason is the disease that these animals can carry, you dont know whether they were killed by a rabid raccoon or a bat. had they died from one of these causes the average LCO does not have the means to safely remove the carcass from the scen and dispose of it.

I like the advice concerning a call to AC, sounds like the thing to do,
also would have defused the customer situation, will have to remember this.

I don't know what the customer ended up doing with the animals. All I know is that when I went back to mow, they were gone. Next time I will call AC. Thanks again

During hard economic times with high foreclosure rates etc: domestic violence, and animal cruelty rises sharply. Folks that have no business owning homes or pets in the first place, are now faced with little or no money to keep them sheltered or to feed them. Sadly a cruel death is the becoming the norm, those lucky pets are now overcrowding animal shelters across the country.

A squirrel, raccoon, or other vermin like that is one thing.. I certainly wouldn't have gone near them, or cut. Nor would i question as to why there are three dead cats in the front lawn. Did you blow it? No.

On a side note, I wound up hitting a dead..something today with my walkbehind on 2 ft grass. The smell devastated the entire block, and I think I saw a little kid running from it.

Right before I scalped a lawn to overseed. I found a dead possum in the front yard at one of my accounts. I advised them to call animal control and have it removed. It was mostly decomposed when I returned to overseed. The possum was areated overseeded and mowed over a few time since they didn't want to do it.

Same here. Your making a big deal of nothing. If it was a wild animal we would bag it like any other piece of trash. If its the home owners property, it gets tossed to a non mowed area like any other piece of home owners property would. PR

I don't care what kind of animals they were, I was not going to touch them. There are two points here. First, they were decaying and full of maggots. Second, there were three of them and they were laid out in a pattern. I was not going to take any responsibility for them. In a case like that, I think liability issues could come into play. Not to mention my health. Do not want to pick up any diseases. Plus, I had just eaten lunch

Animal control should be notified in case this is a recurring problem. I may have just cut around them.

I vote for cutting around them, or moving them with an Easy reacher!:waving:

This may not be everywhere but we have regulations on how dead animals, be it a squirrel, coon, dog or cat, are to be disposed of. Disease reasons. I would have called animal control, especially in the case of multiple domestic animals. They could have died of abuse, neglect or worse yet, a communicable disease. You tried, I know, but I would have told them that they could call animal control or you could do it, but you need to be recompensed for your time.

Some years ago I removed a dead fox from a customers garden, just black-bagged it and later disposed in the green waste. Some month later the same customer found another dead fox by her garage door, so she couldn't get her car out.

As I was not due for a couple of days she calls the RSPCA who sent a guy along to bag it and remove from her property. She had to pay them £200 (about $370) she quite happily handed over the cheque to them and expressed her gratitude to the driver.

Oh how much did she pay me? a cup of tea and a biscuit. :hammerhead:

Wish she'd not told me about it.

I'd been doing her garden for about 12yrs.
