Hi. I am Melanie from NC. I just joined the site today and am just jumping into the forums. My husband and I have been married for 2 years and have 4 children. I had a daughter before we got married who is now 4 years old and together we have twin 17 months olds and a 6 month old.

My husband has been doing lawncare for about 5 years but has been working for a boss. This year my husband decided he wanted to be his own boss. So we started gathering tools for our business. We have acquired a 38 and a 60 inch zero turn we bought used but almost new. We also bought used the trimmer, blower, weed eater and other tools from a landscaping businessman that also owns a power equipment supply here in our area. We just got the 60 inch yesterday and are going tomorrow to get a trailer we're borrowing from a family friend.

We are just now this week ready to roll on our own and are seeking clients. My husband has a few that his boss is gonna give him to get him started. Which is awesome, he has really been a big help in getting us started and is excited for my husband.

So, here we are and I have a bazillion things to learn. I just learned this morning how to drive a zero turn! It's a lot of fun and I am going to mow our lawn this pm while my husband is working.

Hopefully in the next month he can tell his boss he quits and then only I will be his boss! :) And will have more time and more money to be able to take care of our quickly grown family!

welcome to lawn site. there is a lot of good info here so read all you can. this being October it might not be the best time for your husband to quit his job. winter is coming and things will slow down. if his boss has work for him this winter it might be a good idea to stay and make a start in march. only my 2 cents. only you know best. good luck and Never give up.:waving:

Welcome to LS and hope you have good luck. I know more about twins than lawncare! Any question you want to know just ask, there are no dumb questions (well, most of the time):waving:

thanks for the warm welcome. No, my husband doesn't plan to quit his job until he has too much business to do it on the side. His boss actually is giving a couple clients to get him started, which is awesome of him. He also is going to just take an extra day off work and wind it down until he no longer has time to work for his boss. It'll work out well for both us and his boss. That way, he doesn't just lose my husband all at once and we still have an expected income that won't change. Thanks for the tip. And thanks for all the good luck.

Welcome to LS. I have to say that I almost laughed when I read the last line. You will get to spend some of the winter at home but as soon as spring hits it is 12hr days 6 days a week. I am still waiting for this so called "money" to start rolling in. There is always equipment to fix, marketing, bills to pay, insurance, liscenses, and the list goes on and on. Not trying to be discouraging but there are a lot of hidden costs that become very real once the money is coming from your pocket.

Best of Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!

wasn't there a singer named Melanie? "I got a brand new pair of roller skates, you got a brand new key" or something along those lines? Oh well, wayyyyy off track.

Welcome to LS. I got a chuckle about the part you being his only boss once he quits. That's just how I felt when I got started. It didn't take me long to find out I ended up with way to many bosses besides my wife. Every customer is a boss. The bank is a boss, ect, ect. The list goes on forever!!!

The best advise I ever got when I first started....Don't borrow money. When you borrow money, your on your way down.

Good luck and keep us informed.
