I just bought a used 2002 Z and have been restoring it to it's former glory. I changed the belt and set the tension spring at 9 inches. When the clutch is cold, the PTO switch will start the deck right up. But if I have been running it a while, shut the deck down and then try to restart it right away, it doesn't engage. If I let the machine sit for a couple of hours and come back, everything works fine again. Any ideas? Thanks.

we need to know what clutch is on your mower.
Back then we used a Ogura clutch that is adjustable, it sounds like that may be your problem, it may just need to be adjusted.
But if you have the Warner clutch its not adjustable.
You also need to check your wiring all the way from the harness to the clutch, look for broken wires and see what the voltage is at the connector, of course with it unplugged.

Thanks for the reply. I have the Ogura clutch. Since my original post, I was able to find a procedure on adjusting the air gap on that clutch. I checked it last night and the gap was greater than .025 (the thickest feeler gauge I had). I reset it to .014. Didn't have a chance to test it last night but have high hopes that will sove the problem.

That was way outta adjustment, its likely what your problem was.
