That I did, it's just too much for 1/4 acre lawns which is 100% of my accounts right now. And I really need to go back to an enclosed because my parents want the stuff out of the garage lol, and I don't blame them. I want to keep it really bad but it just doesnt suit my needs right now. Personal me says keep it keep it keep it, business me says sell it, get an enclosed and have all your equipment back in one spot and all locked up lol.

plow is going on within the next few weeks. whenever I have time and doug feels like coming out to his shop on a saturday lol.

colin don't sell the deere that's a perfect setup i could see you grow very big in the future.
There was alot of thought that went into putting the deere up for sale. The big motivating factor was the fact that I could sell it and put that $ into an enclosed trailer and still have some left over to drop into the bank. The enclosed trailer will give me back my mobile shop which I desperatley need. Plus I will have 2 trailers so I can haul materials in the open trailer rather than the truck. Trust me I don't want to sell it but in the long run I believe all of this will put me in a better position. It's like "personal" me says no way this mower is awesome dont sell it, but "business" me says you dont really need a 60" for 1/4 acre lots and you could put the money in better places. Not to mention if I pick up the amount of work I hope for this fall and/or next spring I could go out and get a stander or ztr of some sort. Only time will tell though and as long as I still have the mower I will keep using it, and I'm loving every second of it lol.

Colin get a rhino liner for the dodge already haha! I'm getting one this month.
Trust me man its on the list.... the long long list lol!

I also like those chrome wheels on the truck too, the whole think looks real good together.

Heres a few pics of the new lightbar. It's mounted up, wires still have to be run and everything but I like looking at it lol. Also replaced the clearance lights with the recon's. Oh and the customization of the cab guard, gotta rep the school lol.

Also I want some input, I want black rims. I'm between the Rockstars and the moto metals. I honestly think the moto metals would be better because theres a little bit of chrome on them, and I still have a chrome grill/bumpers. But I want YOUR input (unless your username is stroker79, I already know how you feel about black rims lol)

Figured you'd notice lol. its not completely on yet, just the front 6 or so bolts. we have to cut a bracket on the back side so as of right now thats not bolted on. Controller is all mounted in the cab though.

Sweet lightbar! You finally got a real one.
lol thanks, I like urs too. And yeah I would like to think this is a bit of an upgrade from the rotator.

Idk i I mentioned before but I'm gettin the moto metal rims on a tire that is yet to be decided lol.
In addition to the rims there will be:
new tires (bigger also)
tint
power heated mirrors
'08 badges painted black
90W hideaways with 4 clear strobes
Line x / Rhino liner
Brighter headlights
Possibly air bags
Possible dual battery setup.

The first 6 will definitely happen before winter though.

I'm not a fan of totally stock trucks, nor do I like completely custom. I'm trying to find the middle ground between the two which I will hopefully be successful at.

davis45
09-27-2009, 11:05 PM
Moto metals, not rockstars. You can get the moto's in a 16" wheel which is the same as stock. Keep that size and then tires are cheaper. Even if you want a bigger wheel I still say the motos.

edit: ha posted at the same time, guess you already decided on them

lol, I'll probably go bigger cuz I'm gettin a bigger tire. I wanna fill out the wheel well more. just personal preference. Even if they cost more and the mileage is a little worse (its bad already lol) if I can look at it every time and love it itll be worth it to me lol.

yeah today it did, it wont stay running. it has a fuel problem. either pumps on the way out or it has trash in the pick-up tube or the sock is clogged. its gona be a bi tch to get the pump out. you have to take the alternator and a big bracket and the ac compressor off. if only it was moved 2'' to the right it would come right out.

did you ever see that video of a horse.......and a man........ the man dies after..... very disturbing

Update: sold the deere (obviously), picked up 1 48" exmark viking and I am getting a second one this weekend. They are brickam lease returns and between the 2 I will have less than $1300 into them. the second one needs a throttle cable and recoil assembly but thats cheap and something I can do on my own (and I am getting it for next to nothing). Bump for the start of 2010. Have a lot to update on. this year I will be running:
my truck
88 f350 dump (also red, and damn near MINT)
14' bobcat trailer
16'-20' enclosed
and for mowers:
36" exmark hydro
2x 48" exmark hydros
52"-61" stander or ztr (mid-late season pickup)
all stihl handhelds
Have a few things to pick up but this is what it will more than likely end up being.

Will hopefully have a fleet pic before spring.

two questions:
1. Why did you get rid of the enclosed when you had spent all that $$ on it and had it set up so well (really good job on everything btw)

2. Why did you get rid of the Lesco hydro w/ the lights? It only had 100+ hrs on it and seemed like just as good as anything else you ended up with.

Just curious.

I have made a few poor $$ decisions in the past as well and just wanted to know. Maybe your answers will help me out in the future.

Thanks

two questions:
1. Why did you get rid of the enclosed when you had spent all that $$ on it and had it set up so well (really good job on everything btw)
I traded it for a JD stander. I figured I could sell the JD and get more $$ that I could if I sold the enclosed; enabling me to buy another enclosed with $ to spare. In retrospect that was probably one of the dumbest thing's I've ever done. Having a stander was cool and I did it on impulse. My reasoning was I was going to outgrow the 14' quickly, which was dumb because it was MINT, and I got a damn good deal on it IMO. It would have made the perfect rig for an install crew. However, I learned a lot from that experience, and I really try and live by the quote "don't let your emotions cloud your judgement". Sleeping on big decisions is the best thing I have ever done. I did, however strip it all down before I sold it so I still have the $500+ in racks that were in it.

2. Why did you get rid of the Lesco hydro w/ the lights? It only had 100+ hrs on it and seemed like just as good as anything else you ended up with.

The lesco I sold with my single axle trailer (both within hours of being listed lol)to get the enclosed. I figured if I could get what I wanted for it, then I might as well sell it. So I covered most of my stuff with the 36" for a few weeks. wasn't too bad but I didnt really like the cut the lesco left. That I dont really have any remourse about selling. I got what I wanted for it, which was a lot more than I paid for it.
Just curious.

I have made a few poor $$ decisions in the past as well and just wanted to know. Maybe your answers will help me out in the future.

Thanks

I have realized that just because you get a good deal on something, if you sell it; it's pretty unlikely that you will find another deal like that and instead end up paying market value and any profit you made off the sale is gone once you buy another machine. If ou have the cash to buy and sell on the side and have nothing riding on the sale absolutely go for it. But depending on something to sell is only gonna get you into trouble.

That would opportune, but the reality of it happening is slim to none. Before I graduate I would like to have a 2 man self sufficient crew running 5 days a week while I'm away but finding the right people is so difficult. Skid is gonna mostly be used for snow, It'll hopefully be getting an 8' pusher and 8' straight blade.
Will also come in reallly handy for ripping out bushes and I'm gonna try to get more into lawn renovations.

I'll have pics in due time, you guys are just gonna have to wait lol.

As far as the dump, its not mint but pretty good for its age, Might run it to maaco and get her a fresh paint job before the season really starts.

Oh and hopefully the dodge will be GONE by this fall and replaced by a:
7.3 or later 6.0 ford, 3rd gen cummins, or an lbz duramax. I've got a diesel itch that just must be scratched lol.
Depending on how this year goes I just might keep the dodge too and run 3 trucks but IDK.

Sounds good, can't wait to see pics. I am throwing around the idea of a skid for next snow season, let us know how it works for you. Any plans for summer attachments???
Looks like we lost another one to the diesel bug that goes around on here and plowsite. Now that you have a skid and an 18 ft enclosed, you are definately a worthy canidate for one. It might not be worth it to sell the dodge, I don't really know your situation, it seems like you have dumped a decent amount of cash into it, and it may be hard to get back.. You might be better of hanging on to it and finding another plow driver next winter. I have no idea, just throwing out ideas.

I'm sure your not surprised, but my vote is the D-MAX/ALLSION combo, can't beat it, IMO. However it all comes down to what you find when your buying used. Heck, I almost ended up with a blue oval on the front of the grill:cry:, but I was lucky to come across my chevy:cool2:
Anyways, good luck this year, don't work yourself to death:drinkup:

02-17-2010, 12:47 AM
Lol yea the $ I've dumped into the dodge has all been stuff that pretty much can be transfered on to any truck with the exception of the tint. Except I'd probably leave the cab guard on it along with the lights on the cab guard and under the bumper. I would however keep my lightbar. I like it too much lol. I'd be fine with any of the big 3's diesel, they all have high and low points. No matter what truck I end up with it'll get a 3" or so leveling kit so the low stock height of the gm's isn't an issue. I really like the 7.3's but it's hard to look past the fact that you can get wayyyy more hp and tq out of a dmax or cummins with a tuner vs a 7.3. But I LOVE LOVE LOVE the looks and interiors of the fords so they will probably win out lol

and as far as summer attachments for the skid, the most it will probably see is the bucket that's on there now, and maybe a set of forks.

I'll probably get a job for another company during the week and work my stuff onthe weekends. Doesn't leave a lot of free time but this sh*t isn't free! And if it rains I'll just take that as an opportunity to catch up on my "me" time lol.

All i have to say is your amazing. I live in Michigan and im 17. I have about 25 customers and i am going to college next year for landscape architecture, ornamental hori, and turf management(including irrigation) pretty much the complete package to learn everything about the aspect of landscaping(Michigan state university). You just amaze me by how much equipment you have owned and bought yourself. the list that i have of your running total of equipment that you have owned in 2 years is, 4 bob cats, 2 lesco's, 2 exmarks, a john deere 60" stander, and a 21" push. the trailers, a 12ft open,14 ft open, 18 foot enclosed, and a 14x7 enclosed. Trucks: f350 dump, and dodge ram 2500.

The big question for me is where are you getting all of this money to pay for all this equipment, how much accounts do you have per week and how much do you make per client.

I want to be like you some day, i have a lot of years ahead of me to grow but i am just curious how you run your business

after reading this thread for 2 hours, and examining every single picture like an x-ray i am seriously drooling on my keyboard, hah:hammerhead: ,

also, do you pay taxes, are you insured and also, how do you start a website.

Thanks ,

You just amaze me by how much equipment you have owned and bought yourself. the list that i have of your running total of equipment that you have owned in 2 years is, 3 bob cats, 3 lesco's, 1 exmark, a john deere 60" stander, (got to demo a 52" grandstand also)and a 21" push. the trailers, a 12ft open,14 ft open (x2), 18 foot enclosed, and a 14x7 enclosed. Trucks: f350 dump, and dodge ram 2500.

There, lol Ive made a few corrections for you. But you got it as far as the equipment goes. I've flipped around A LOT (more that I'm proud to admit) but doing it like this I have been able to try soooo many different machines on my accounts so I know what works for me and what doesnt. Like the post I made earlier in this thread I really have no regrets from doing it like this and I have learned so much its not even funny.

The big question for me is where are you getting all of this money to pay for all this equipment, how much accounts do you have per week and how much do you make per client.

I've saved up and paid cash for EVERYTHING, it all started with my old 48" bobcat belt that I stripped down and repainted and put new decals and everything on. It was my baby and I hated to see her go, but I paid $850 for it and it paid for itself so many times its not even funny. Then the 36" belt and 48" lesco and 6x12 trailer all from the same guy (bought it with a blown engine, but never ended up fixing it) Sold the lesco and bobcat for parts the following winter after the bobcat blew the engine in the fall. Then worked all winter plowing in exchange for a basically brand new 48" lesco wb (put all the $ from the hours I worked towards the mower). Then I sold the 48" lesco and 6x12 trailer and got my 14' enclosed and all the racks with the $ from selling the lesco and trailer with $0 out of pocket. Then traded the 14' enclosed for the stander, then sold the 36" and got my 14' open and then picked up the 36" hydro bobcat from another member on here.
Then sold the stander and bought a 48" lesco and 48" exmark hydro (currently for sale) and pocketed the rest.

I also bought a 7.5' unimount and completely refurbished it and then sold it for 2x what I paid for it and got an 8'6" straight blade.

And it just goes on from there, basically I have done all of this with little to no $ out of pocket and it's not like I went and bought everything at once.
The only Loan I have EVER taken out has been for my truck, which isnt too far from being paid off. I just can't see having loans out on mowers or trailers.

As far as accounts, I have a full weekend thats for sure, and as far as $ is concerned I'd rather not say. Just something I dont feel is appropriate to share over a public forum but keep in mind I have hardly any bills being 18 years old besides food, gas, truck payment and beer lol.

The only help I have recieved form my parents was $50 for when I bought my first mower, and my mom cosigned on the loan for my truck.

I want to be like you some day, i have a lot of years ahead of me to grow but i am just curious how you run your business

Thanks man, compliments always go a long way. I really love landscaping and just keep working your a** off and dont blow through $$ and you'll be surprised where that will get you. My biggest vice is how bad $$ seems to burn a hole in my pocket lol. I'm extremely lucky to have the client base that I do and I owe everything I have to them. I feel like I do good work and luckily I have found quite a few clients that still appreciate that.
I've also been doing this since I was in 6th grade, and I've loved ALMOST every day of it lol.

after reading this thread for 2 hours, and examining every single picture like an x-ray i am seriously drooling on my keyboard, hah:hammerhead: ,

lol, There's a bunch I havent posted, but I figured once youve seen one pic of stripes/mulch youve seen them all lol.

also, do you pay taxes, are you insured and also, how do you start a website.

This will be my first year on the books, mostly because it is the first full year I will be 18. I didnt want things in my parents name and I kept things low key and was very very careful.
The website is through microsoft office, the site I went to was officelive.com (or something like that) and it guides you step by step. It took literally a full day of writing and editing to do the site and there's still a few things I would liek to add but I'm retty happy with it for the most part.

Thanks ,
Jason

No it really isnt, getting a lot of driveways in town and then driving the skid to them would be ideal if you're gonna use it for driveways. oherwise trailering it would be a waste of time.

My town is small, it's probably a mile or so to my farthest account, with driveways along the way. A good friend of mine does all the big parking lots in town with his two trucks with BOSS v-plows, so driveways are pretty much all I do. I have a lot of small and narrow streets, so positioning a long box truck all the time takes forever, especially since my Meyer plow sucks at backdragging. I watch guys with 753 Bobcats do the exact same size driveways in 1/2 the time, if not less. Plus, snow can be scooped and stacked places where trucks can't.

Oh yea, snow is good $ and it's nice to be able to maximize every minute you're out. I think if you can swing a skid it'd be a no brainer. Even if it sits all summer it's still worth it if it cust 3/4 of the time off your route in the winter..

I've even had to turn down accounts because a couple of the driveways had landscaping and retaining walls right along the driveway, and the snow needed to be scooped up and dumped next to the garage. I would be able to use the skid in summer sometimes, and I have a buddy who owns an excavating business who has a T250, but sometimes has the need for a wheeled skid, then I'd let him rent it from me. It just really makes me think when I see a guy with an S130 and a snow bucket clean 3 driveways in the same neighborhood in the time it takes me to do 1 driveway.

I have a quick question. how much did you pay for the bobcat. I am looking for a good deal on one, a 2005 with 674 hours on it. the 743, with a landscape rake, front bucket, a pretty new snow pusher, grapple, and pallet forks. Its my uncles neighbors, and he only used it on his 4 acre property and thats it. It will be the 36" hydro, an older belt wb and I'm looking to get a 48" hydro (exmark or bobcat) before spring.

I am not liscensed and will actually probably be subbing any fert work I pick up to a local guy. No plow or salter for the dump, and no real plans for one at least in the not too distant future. No jobs for the bobcat, it will primarily be for snow and the occasional landscape job since I don't do much landscape work on the scale of needing a bobcat

Thanks man, only thing in the works for this year really is a dump insert, and I need new tires before winter, 285 hankook atm's!
I do however have to replace the resistor, cat, swaybar bushings, trac bar and possilby the u joint on the front driveshaft. Gotta spend $ top make $? lol

Nice! Why that tire? I want some Nitto Terragrapplers, not a real meaty tire, but enough..

And Dodges are known for some front end problems, but hey, like you said, gotta spend money to make money..

about the lettering on the trailer, what about something to match the logo as your avatar?

I like the 2nd trailer prototype. I also absolutely love the trailer.
welcome to the club. I love it too! Hopin to have her all lettered up before fall. Along with diamond plate fenders in the not too distant future.

Looks nice

They're relatively cheap compared to BFG's and nitto's, and I have a friend who has them and absolutely loves them. They look awesome too.

Yeah, I cant really complain, any sfa truck isnt gonna be fun when it comes to front end parts lol. Overall its been good to me though(knock on wood)

about the lettering on the trailer, what about something to match the logo as your avatar?

Thats the plan, My logo is just too messy when you try to copy and past it onto something thats not perfectly white and it's too pixelated to try to change the colors of it unless you go over every single bit of it and change the color. I have to get it rendered b/c the guy that originally designed it has since gone AWOL and I can't get in touch with him.

New stuff looks nice. If you ever decide to come back up my way to check out the new stadium this summer and you still got one of those vikings laying around, let me know. I'm not looking forward to another season with a SFS deck.
I really like these wells cargo trailers you keep finding, I look on CL up here and can't seem to find many. Are you setting this one up the same way as the previous one?

Why not a dump trailer? A lot more capcaity than most dump's and no Fuel, half the ins, maint etc.

Anyways here is the new enclosed all set up for the most part, still have another one or 2 more blowers to add before fall and the 36" wasn't in the trailer for this pic.
Also you cant see it but the leaf loader is tucked away in the front of the trailer- 16hp giant vac w/ extended chute and swing away hitch.

Once I'm done w/ classes for the summer I'll strip everything out and paint it but theres just no timr for it now and its a miracle I even had time to do this.

It actually doesnt buddy, seeing as the pictures turned out blurrier than sh*t, or are you referring to the last picture? I've held back for the longest time but the "looks good" and "have fun with it" posts that you and austin seem to share just annoy the living crap out of me. Don't take it personally or go running to the mods I just see it as such an incredibly generic and mongomous waste of a post and someones time reading it. Again nothing Personal and I cant say a bad word against your character and I would never go after austin or you in your own thread about it but for some reason I felt compelled to point it out here.

Please next time either be specific or bring something of value to the table, I would prefer not to have to read through fifty "Looks good" posts a day. And the first person to say "if you don't like it don't read it" gets a cookie that has "go F*ck yourself san diego!" written on it with that pink little icing just like the one mommy used to pack in your lunch so when you shat yourself before lunch you had something else to look forward to that day rather than the ever famous novel "everybody poops"

Let the horassing and jumping on my back commense..
Yours truly,
Colin

as far as the truck goes, the car I've been driving to school and back is basically done for and instead of replacing it and once again having 2 vehicles on INS, fuel in both, repairs on both, wearables on both, plates, etc (**** all adds up) and only having one of those 2 make $ back. Sold both and put it into one that I love and will easily see 250k+ miles and ~10 more years reliably. The dodge was needin some good $ in work (I know youve been down that road lol) too. got the guy who gave me too much for it and off to the bank I went.
