View Full Version : Wd40 : To prime 2 cycle

When I had my shop in the 80's and later, I used wd40 to prime everything -- even our 2 cycle repairs.
Since they changed the formula, the wd40 does not prime as before.
??????? IS THERE ANY AEROSOL THAT WILL PRIME AND LUBRICATE LIKE THE OLD FORMULATION OF WD40 ???????
Thanks,
echoman

I don't use WD for anything :nono: anymore.
I've been putting a little of the shop 2cycle mix in a squeeze bottle kinda like these---> http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=94390
Works good for both 2 and 4 cycle and no more WD=Wasted Dollars:laugh:

DeepCreep by Seafoam. But if it's repaired correctly, you shouldn't have to be using any outside chemical to "prime" it.

What changed about WD40 and when did it happen?

I have seen guys actually use starting fluid to try to get the engine to run then BAM, it locks up. I steer people from using it because there is no oil lubrication at all in it.

Hey on that note, now that I know what you guys are talking about,
why would you use anything other than starting fluid anyhow?
A can is only a couple of bucks at the store,
and I don't use it unless it absolutely will not start.
It's a last resort, and sometimes the first step in troubleshooting,
but I wouldn't go spraying crap into the carburetor all the time
because that stuff will eat up the cylinder walls of the engine.

They are using it because it does have a slight lubrication quality for a two stroke as mentioned, but I am with the rest of you... fix the problem, rebuild the carb or replace the crank seals or whatever else leaks in a leak test. We pressurize our two strokes when they don't start good and a carb kit don't fix them. Usually find something leaking...

problem is with regular starting fluid is that it has very little lubrication, I have seen guys use it before because something will not start, they use some and the piston seizes up will turning it over, I have seen that done a couple of times, thankfully not to any of my stuff.

WD-40's propellant used to be propane.

i think that wd 40 now is mostly kerosene

What about carb cleaner sprays ?

carb cleaners will work too, anything that is made for the engine to clean, ect that is flammable will will work. deep creep sea foam works fine, has plenty of lubrication, comes in quart can and spray can, but is has a stiff price, i think our guys pay 6 to 7 bucks a can. i dont think that carb cleaners have lubrication tough

No lube for one. You will turn a new engine into a dope addict so it will not start unless you use it EVERY time
I have seen carbs blown off. I have seen mufflers blown off. I have seen heads cracked and I know a man that got shoot using in on a chain saw. It shoot the spark plug into his shoulder. I seen the X-ray of the spark plug in his shoulder. If you want to use something to cheat use carb cleaner. Still has no lube but you will not have to have to have the carb removed from your forehead as it has a lot less kick. The best thing to use is gas in a spray bottle or squeeze bottle. Starter fuild has killed more engines than it ever started.

When we buy a used string trimmer, blower, saw or whatever... that we are going to fix up and it needs a carb kit or whatever to make it run, before we waste the money on it we fire it using a little squirt bottle with 2 stroke mixed fuel in it. We squirt it into the intake and fire it to make sure it runs and get an idea of what all it needs...
