I've got an Echo trimmer (that's a backup) that runs fine/better when I turn it upside down. It runs, barely in the normal position (it will sometimes stall out), but if you just turn it over with your hand it runs a lot better. Could this be a needle in the carb?

What model is it? When the crews bring them in I don't care what the problme is I always do the following:
1. New fuel filter, breather and air filter.
2. New plug
3. Clean exhaust and ports
4. Take rope starter off be sure crank seal is in place.
5. Check to be sure head gasket is not leaking...usually see crud around it if it is.
Next.....I will try to adjust carb a little...all echo units can be adjusted some have hidden screws and some have to have the jet turned manually
Next I put a kit in the carb
With these things done I have been 100% sucess in getting units to run.

It's a 210 & besides adjusting the carb that much (I haven't had time) everything that you just mentioned I have already done. This is the reason I was asking.

might have a pinhole in the fuel line.

Yup, pinhole or a kink in the fuel line would be my guess. use a wire, like a coat hanger to pull the line out and inspect it. If it is still nice and firm, (they can deteriorate) feed it back in, making sure it doesn't twist or bend.
