My Scag 48 inch belt drive WB started to run horribly the other day. It ran funny without the blades engaged and once I engaged the blades, it would barely stay running or shut off. So I pulled the plugs and they were completely black. I went and got some new ones and after 5 residential lawns they were totally black again and the mower would barely run. Any ideas what could be causing the problem or what might need to be replaced/looked at?

Thank you for the help. I need the mower running by Thursday to mow lawns.

Here's a website, you can figure out your particular circumstances. Tony

For a quick fix, try getting a hotter plug. It seems as if you have deeper issues than that though. See if the hotter plugs can get you through the season. I wouldnt get only 1 or 2 ranges hottter, as to not damage the engine.

Mr. Obvious says you should put in a new air filter.

HAHA. I did think of that first, but havn't had a chance to look at it yet because of classes the past few days. I'll take a look at everything tomorrow. Seems like it's burning a little more gas than usual, which would cause the spark plugs to go faster. We'll see. Thanks for the info

Check to make sure the choke is not sticking on partially. Be sure choke cable works properly and adjusted correctly.
