Looking for advice on what type of grass to use on a youth Football field. The field will be new and I will be sarting from scratch. I'm in Middle Tennesse. I was thinking of Bermuda but someone told me that it was hard to grow it from seed.
Any advice would be great.

Tifway Bermuda, and it sold by the pallet or roll not the seed.

Is the Tifway expensive? I will be funding this project myself. What type of prep for this and when would be the best time to install.

I would check with the farm where you would get it. I would say that laying the sod would be the best. You can get your ground level, sprinkler system down right, and the crown like it needs to be. Laying it this time of the year it would be cheaper, less fert, etc. With seed, a freeze could kill the young grass, or come up with bald spots. I would check with others in your part of the country to see what they would say.

Middle Tennessee has an expanse of sod farms. Just let your fingers do the walking! If your youth season extends into the fall, you may want to think about annual rye aswell. Zoysia may also be a good choice for the field. Cut it nice and high(2.5") and it will be a nice, soft surface for the kids.

If you have really good topsoil and aren't in a hurry, you may want to think about sprigging rather than sodding. It's a lot cheaper; and, if you have next summer to work it in, you'll end up with a nice field by August.

In Middle tn their are sevral ways to go. I am partial to Sahara Bermuda it is a great quality turf that can handle the traffic with a better color than tifway. It has other advantages for your situation as well. It can be planted by seed, hydromulched, sprigged or soded. The down side is that it does not like to be cut as short as tif. Useually cut Sahara around 1.5 -2 inches. Their is another variety of Bermuda you could use that has a deeper color than the sahara but I will have to consult my notes at the office at work so as soon as I do I will let you know.
