We've had two redmax trimmers, i believe the 2401, maybe the 2501's for two years now. They are starting to give us problems. Until they're good and hot you have to keep them on their side to keep them running good and strong. If you hold them flat they bog down and sometimes die. Is this just the carb needing cleaned out or is there something up with the carb itself?

Also, what is the suggested maintenance on the clutches in these things? One of them makes some noise now and neither of the heads stop spinning on their own. You have to stick the head into the grass to make it stop. This sometimes causes the motor to stop.

Thanks!

Have your dealer adjust the carbs if they are BCZ2401 units...bulletin #08-01-R1. As far as the heads...it sounds like the clutch springs are bad.

i'm not sure if this helps, but check your spark arrestor (I remove all mine) and pull your muffler off & check the exhuast port. Mine was 1/2 clogged and I was loosing all kinds of power.

Thanks! The very first thing i do when I purchase a new 2-cycle piece of equipment is yank that darned spark arrestor out!

I think we're just going to drop them off at the dealer for the winter and let them deal with it. It's almost vacation!

Don't yank the spark arresters out.....If they are clogging up then something isn't right. Mention the service bulletin when you take them in.

Well unless you want to run up a big bill you better at least try replacing all the following bef ore taking it in:
1. plug
2. breather
3. air filter gas filter
4. Take exhaust and clean ports.
5. Clutch spring and new shoes if worn.
And then try adusting carb if it has screws. The dealer will replace all the st uff and you will be around $100 bucks before he start on the other stuff.

ed2hess.....It is a carb adjustment that is needed. There is a Rexmax service bulletin that covers his issue. If the unit is still in warranty it will cost zip..............Carbs are set lean to meet EPA standards and the dealer has the proper procedure and tools to adjust.

I hear you......Dealer tried to charge me $70 buck when I took my Echo in and it had only 40 days. They need adjustment after wear in. I had changed all the stuff I included above to avoid the charge and they had it on the bill anyway. The ower and I had a little talk....he apologized and took it off. My only point is while it only needs carb adjustment they can and usually will charge for plug, filters ,,,,etc. Sad situation but it happens. I will never take in any units any more.
