View Full Version : 25 HP Kohler Command starts then shuts down

Hello Everyone,
I am going crazy and need some help. :hammerhead:
I have a Wright Stander with a 25 25 HP Kohler Command Twin (CV-26 I think) that will start up but then shut down within 2-3 seconds. With choke it will last another 5 seconds or so. It had not been started but twice in the last 3 months. It seems like a fuel problem to me so this is what I have done already:
Disassemble and soak carb in GUNK for 48 hours.
Rinse, spray out with air, remove and spray out jets.
Reassemble and put back on the mower.
No luck.
I changed the fuel filter.
It started and ran for a couple minutes. I shut it off to change the oil then put my tools away, etc. When I tried starting it again 15 minutes later it did the same thing, started then died.
When cranking it seems to be pumping gas to the carb because I took the fuel line from the carb and fuel comes out of it when cranking. I don't know how much should be being pumped though.
I added new gas.
Still no luck.

if your carb has a fuel shut off solenoid on the bottom of it, make sure its getting good power and staying open when acting up. Have seen quite a few issues on wrights with the fuses, ign switch and wiring/connections that controls the power to the fuel solenoid. If you listen closely to the bottom of the carb, with the key moved from off to the on/run position you should be able to hear it click, or put a test light or meter on the wire that connects to the solenoid wire and see if you getting 12volts to it.
Also check to make sure your tank fitting is not clogged with debris or plastic shavings as well as the fuel filter. back a few years ago we had major tank shaving issues on wrights.

I have power to the solenoid but I don't hear a clicking. Could the solenoid be bad? Is there a way to test it?
I'm pretty sure the tank isn't clogged becuase if I take the hose off it flows fast.

you can check solonoid by just removing from th carb. then turn on your ingnition while someone sits in seat, and make sure you ground the switch up agaist the carb if it pulls in it is good. also on a kohler you need to check fuses for the charging circuit. and check regulator. If all else fails remove white wire for shutoff, this will eliminate saftys.

I'm just speaking from my own experience. However I have rebuilt carbs on a few things and it seems on the ones that have sat for a while I always have to take it apart and clean it multiple times before I get everything out. I will clean it, put it together with new parts and something happens and when I take it apart again. I find more junk, matter of fact I just had it happen this weekend again. So if all else fails try going through the carb again and cleaning it out and maybe try to not blow it out as the air may have dirt in it and just let it "drip dry" for a few minutes...

And as crazy as this sounds,...your tank(s) may not be venting adequately. I have a friend that just went through this with a Lazer. Loosen the caps, and try it again. It will start hard, but see if it runs longer.

That engine has what is called a spark or speed advance module on it. Going to that module is a red wire. Unplug that red wire and make sure it has battery voltage with the ignition key in both the start and run postition. It has to have power to start the engine and also to keep it running. To keep power from backfeeding there are diodes in both the start circuit and the run circuit. It is possible that the diode in the run circuit is open and not allowing voltage to that module. That would let the engine start but as soon as you let off the key it will die. Just something worth checking and pretty simple to check.
