Well... I got out of the landscaping business and went full time into Excavation. I was sick of mowing lawns. This is my new truck 2006 F250. The grill matches the paint. I will get more pics soon. Comments welcome.

Not saying i know everything but i'd be very skeptical about jumping into the excavation field and work related to new construction with the way our economy is going. I know large companies like one in particular, the owner told me last year "ahh theres no money in mowing and maintenance" and now he just laid off 6 guys and has a mowing crew going all over from north of boston to Nashua NH area. He typically majors in large installations and excavation. I'm keeping busy doing maintenance and lawn and landscape renovations. Many contractors will agree that maintenance helps keep the cashflow steady and always have something going on which can lead to the large renovation and new construction jobs. A friend of mine who does full landscape services say that maintenance pays all his payroll and common expences like fuel.

... I Don't mean to be preaching so dnt take it in a bad way bud.

Truck looks nice, do you have to tow heavy equipment?

The truck does look good and I love the decals..

I dont think he pulling to much with what looks like a 2in ball on his truck unless he runs a gooseneck and with the stuff in his bed, I kinda doubt that...

I agree, atleast with lawns you have a constant income, where as excavating, you need to be a well established business to keep the working coming in.

I think one of the hardest things is making the jump from week to week maintnence to doing individual jobs. You can look at like the bigger the risk the bigger the reward, usually you make more money getting new work all the time but you never know if its going to be there when the week is over and a new one begins.

Anyways sweet truck man good luck with the new biz it might be hard with the state of the housing market but nothings impossible.

you started this trend to everyone what you are doing now and that = we want to see pic;s of equipment and work. Do you have a minix or a bob cat?your equipment list tells us what kind of tires you have on your truck and you want a write stander to replace your 21". so if you have what you say post a pic and prove me wrong.

So where's this heavy equipment?

zero_turn_freak
10-19-2008, 12:17 AM
man you really went cold turkey

I would have slowly tansition, like lawn care and light duty excavation, until you have a bsiness established.

But none the less, good look, i hate to see fellow lawn companies dissapear (unless they are working in my area of course lol)

Good luck with your new business, sincerely. But some advice for you would be , dont totally leave your landscaping gig. The economy is really tough right now and unless you intend to kick ass and take names 7 days a week day and night it will be hard to find work for a newbie. Theres alot of experienced boys out there calling in all there old contacts and keeping prices low to keep things busy for there crews. Good luck and pay attention to the bottom line. doug

Digdug...i checked out your website...nice to see other honey pumpers in the house

call me a skeptic but don't think a shiny truck with nice letters is enough to get you jobs...i also wouldn't consider anything you can move with a standard Class C License to be heavy equipment either

you won't get very far in the "excavating world" unless you have your CDL

Yes they are heavy enough. We have had this discussion many times over on the heavy equipment forum but I dont like chains, neither does dad, he has used them since the early 80's.. Many people have told me to switch to chains but I am staying with straps..

What do you mean by "No "Wide Load" signs were posted on the trailer."?

When I get enough to buy my own equipment, that time will come, but as for now the best thing I can do is make contacts and try to get my name out there. good for you bud....you learn a lot from being down in the hole

if you are just getting into the biz you need to experience all aspects, labor, operator, truck driver etc... that way one day if one of your guys can't make it in to work then you can fill in and not miss a beat...

but i can't stress this enough...and maybe you already have it...but if you want to make it in the big leagues you NEED to get your class A CDL....especially if you buy a truck and can't justify hiring a driver just yet

and you had better do it soon...new regulations will require a lot more drive time/class time, now you can get your permit and 2 days later go take the test...so do it while it is still easy
