View Full Version : Does Kohler CV20S have magnetic ring/band in flywheel?

I have a Kohler Command Twin CV20S (spec 65557) in a Sears yard tractor. I had a grinding noise at the top of engine (flywheel end) and the tractor was not charging. When I pulled the flywheel off I found a damaged stator (part 237878) and a lot of small metallic (and magnetic) pieces scattered around. The pieces wad up to about a golf ball or hockey puck size. First, I thought the pieces came from the damaged stator but I that now have the replacement part, and it is obvious that this material did not come from the stator. Now I think there may have been a magnetic strip or band pressed into the recess on the bottom of the flywheel.

Can you confirm whether or not there is a magnet (looks like would be a ring or band about 6 inches in diameter, 1 inch tall, and ¼ inch thick. If this is the case, I need a replacement flywheel. If not, I can’t figure out were the pile of magnetized metal pieces came from. The manual does not describe the flywheel or show a picture of the underside.

I need a replacement flywheel.

The above is what you need, There were magnets glued to the inside of the flywheel. Rust built up under the magnets and popped them loose, That's what destroyed the stator.

Install new flywheel and you should be back in business......

Was this the first time the flywheel was removed? I have seen magnets pop loose if the flywheel was hit during removal

Rob,
I second the motion. Usually, a couple of the magnets will still be on the flywheel. Funny part is, the stator is not that tore up for all the magnets being missing!!

Thirded! Most times by the time the second magnet has come loose, the stator is wiped out. All of the magnet must have come loose at once and stuck to the stator.
