The tag I place on the main shut off valve in the house reads something to the effect "SPRINKLER SYSTEM MAIN SHUT OFF VALVE..THIS SYSTEM HAS BEEN WINTERIZED...DO NOT OPEN" I also have my C. name and number on it.
Today was doing a new customer and the tag from the old company was about 15 sentences long.....could not read it as it was torn in half and been distorted by water...
Seemed really long for just a waring tag.....wish I had the camera with.
Got me thinking about what everybody puts on theirs?

Do what we do to backflow on well systems - remove the handles.

Might as well, they're gonna rust anyway.

I used to do something similar. Just a tag with "Sprinkler On/Off Handle" and our company info. Not sure why I stopped doing it. it would have really helped with the rentals. Ask tom tom about getting a hold of the damn tenants. But if we were able to just tell them, turn the handle marked xxxx, and we'll do the rest, it would be much easier.

We just slap a service sticker on the handle. same ones that go on the clocks.

I went to do a blowout yesterday, on a system I installed about 10 years ago. They just moved in and called because of MY STICKER on the controller. I haven't worked on this one in 5-6 years. Couple different owners during that time. I think this is the 4th owner since I installed it. The landscaping and system has been changed, rigged, ruined since I was there last.

Yup rentals can be a real pita. Most lack the courtesy to return a phone call.

Thats when you need to talk the owner into an ext shutoff.

I hear ya. The part is what, 180? So, close to 300 installed? Most wouldn't pay that.
Another idea is to send letters to tenants putting the responsibility on them to call the designated sprinkler company. They fail to call = money out of their pocket

I'm at the point where I try to avoid working with renters. The just don't care about anything with the house. Landlords are too tight to repair anything. System just goes to @#$%.
My customers don't know where the shut off are and don't want to know. :)

I have a lot like that too. Some don't want to know. Don't want to touch it. Don't touch the controller either.

Pita customers in my eyes.I like the ones that can follow instructions on a postcard, leave an inteligent message and dont need a call back "just to know I got the message"

I was referring to customers that are reliant and dependent on you for most everything.....without being a PITA. Customers who trust you enough to let you do anything that is needed without question.

I agree. It might be a pain to shut down, but it's part of the job. We do about 50/50 shut off. I don't go to the oil change shop and have them ask me to undo the drain plug and they will do the rest.
But yes I try to get people to shut off themselves, for the fact that it saves THEM from taking off of work to meet me. It does make my job easier if it is off, but this is what some people need done. I do give a 2 hour window as to when we would show up if they need us to shut down.

Most of mine are tapped in the meter pit. Rarely anybody needs to be home but there are always a few that insist that I do it when they are there. :hammerhead:

Like most others have said I would say that 85% already have the water shut off.
For those of you that use a warning tag do you have them made or do you make them yourself?
Does anyone know on where to find hang tags with the wire already through the hole?

I buy those tags @ officemax. It cost 6 bucks for 100. I just put my stickers on the shipping tag w/ my info.

Some do with a hydraulic system, if I'm not mistaken.
I have customers that think the seasonal adjust % feature increases the pressure :dizzy:

Some people refer to the PVB as "the pump". I've also had people be amazed that when a valve sticks open, shutting off the controller doesn't shut off the valve too.

I get both of those too.
According to H/Os
PVB or RP =
pump
regulator
bell housing
meter
blow back valve
bypass valve
booster
and so many others I can't think of now
