how do u aerate?

can someone tell me the right way to aerate,does the machine do it all

Before I can answer I need to know: what type of grass, why are you aerating, and when do plan on doing it, how big is the area, and etc... Give a little background info. to let us know more about your situation.

To answer your original question. yes, you can just go up and down the lawn. It depends on what type of aerator you are using to determine how much work you will have to do. If it's a tow behind, all you have to do it hook it up, weight it, and go. If it's a walk behind, get ready to be tired after the day is over.
