Anyone else sick of this rain, seems like every other day it's raining and the next 5 days don't look any better.

I just gave over 50% of our lawn accounts to another company, a friend of mine that mainly does lawn mowing. Im sick of the constant calls in the last two months alone about..

1. lumps in grass
2. Your not bagging my grass.. hello Ahole, we've never bagged your grass!
3. You left marks on my sidewalks..
4. You left marks on my driveway, pavers etc...
5. Tearing up the lawn... obvious gripe.. its so wet, all the zero turns are tearing at least a little.
6. you left ruts in my lawn... "real ruts". well sometimes the lawns are so wet, you feel obvious indents where the wheels drove, even our walkbehinds.
7. You left grass all over my white vinyl fence... even after the crew shoots away from the fences "or other areas" 2 -3 passes, one heavy chunk of grass can shoot 20+ feet and hits the fence.. sorry cant help that.
8. Why arnt you mulching the grass anymore? sure let me make matters worse
9. Why hasnt my grass been cut yet? "bi weekly accounts", maam... you get cut this thursday, 2 more days, you have to wait, your lawn gets cut every othere thursday as normal, we'd be glad to switch you to weekly if you'd like... is that more", yes it is, you pay each week... oh ok, no thanks.
10. You said my grass would be cut tomorrow... no i said thursday and today is wednesday, do you want it cut weekly? .... no lol
11. My grass was cut last friday "its wednesday" and it looks horrible, maybe your guys arnt cutting it short enough, can it be cut today... i have a party tomorrow... sorry we dont cut your town on wednesdays
12. "late payers", with all this rain its hard to tell if your guys were here or not in the last month!---- luckily its over the phone, or id kill someone :(
13. Why arnt you weeding the mulch beds? we dont weed the mulch beds sir, we never have and its not part of your lawn mowing contract.. its an extra fee. This same guy nearly cancelled b/c then he said our services wernt a good deal "for lawn mowing" and we should include it!
14. BAGGED LAWNS, few in between here... one guy says he wants it cut at 3" every week... hah, this lawn is cut at 4.5" and grows like a mofo, we take a yard of grass clippings out of there every week. i told him one time bagging price of $160.00...he wants it done for his standard $45.00 per week lol.

ok thats enough. Tired of the BS, its difficult to even keep a positive company image with so many complainers over every little detail of these BS lawn accounts. I kept our tight routed ones and larger ones all close together "almost all that dont complain too" and get rid of the rest. We're still getting calls for lawn service in almost october.. their first words are "the kid that cut my grass went back to school" OR "the other company didnt bag the grass good enough" OR "the other company was too expensive" ---at $40.00 for 3/4ths of an acre.

GO AWAY dont call us for lawn mowing.

A question for you guys. What do you all think are important in a equipment repair center. Example availabilty of parts for your own repairs, availabilty of a loaner, brand availabilty, field service. What are most popular brands around here.

Dealer support is big for me especially turn around time on getting items repaired and back in the field. I see a lot of guys with Wright standers, but personally I am an exmark and scag guy.

Parts on hand is the most important and a quick turn around if equipment is dropped off for repairs is a must I hate waiting weeks for equipment to be fixed !

I see lots of guys with eXmark and bobcats around here.

Hey Kirk,
Thanks for mentioning the short courses at Rutgers. I happen to be one of the guys there who helps put them together. In fact, I just left "Hazardous Tree Identification," and I can tell you there are plenty of landscapers here in Jersey. If anyone is looking for more info just let me know.

Bill, your right. This is a great networking opportunity. Other networking opportunities, include, the many green industry associations and their trade shows representing the state, as well as education sessions offered by manufacturers, dealers and the short course program at Rutgers. It's amazing just how many green industry companies are in this state and how few know each other.

Kirk

Kirk - Thanks for mentioning the short courses at RU. I'm one of the guys who helps make those classes happen - in fact, I just left a room full of landscapers learning about "Hazardous Tree Identification." Need a little help here deciding if i am crazy or not. Just did a leaf cleanup before thanksgiving. The house sits on an acre wooded lot. Front yard has abot 1500 sq ft of ivy under a ton of trees. Took 3 guys 9 hrs and two trips to dumps. Bill came to around $900 and she seems to think its way to steep. The most she said shes ever paid was 550 and those crews were there all day as well. How does anyone make money sending a crew there all day for $550? I have large equip 13hp blower, br550 blowers and 25 hp vac and still took awhile. Is that price that unreasonable?

Obv no two are the same, but my 4 guys do about 4 heavily wooded acres in 7 hours. 1-9hp and 2 RM....not to mention the leaf load was significantly lighter this year for some reason...maybe 30% less if I had to guess. Too many variables to really comment though...Were they all maples on a wet day..etc? My intuition is saying you're guys are on the slow side. My man hour rate was more than double what you posted above and no one ever complained as we were really fast.

I hear this all the time - how to deal with people who work at lower prices. A couple of classes here have instructors who talk about this, and they say you need to sell your clients on the idea "you get what you pay for." But it's a tough thing to do. I've seen a couple of very successful guys talk about it, though, (Chris James at Chris James landscaping, David Beausoleil of Cast Ligting) and this is some of what they say (only with more detail).

JoeAtRU

Chris James is teaching a class about this very topic on Monday, Common Sense Business and Pricing Strategies For Landscape Contractors (http://www.cpe.rutgers.edu/courses/current/al0307ca.html). He runs a huge business in North Jersey - I've seen him before and he's a straight-talking guy who tells it like it is.

If someone does (Hydroseeding) how much more cost efficient is that compared to other types of seeding? What is the cost comparison in bulk buying?

I pay 1500 a truck so that doesn't look that bad to me if it includes your auto ins.
