Just figured I would see how many of us are on here. I've been starting to see a lot more of us. Lawnsite is a pretty cool concept in general, talking to lawn guys across the country and even the world, but I think it's even cooler talking to lcos that are only a few miles away and didn't even know it. Let's try to keep our own little sub-forum going that we we can always reach out to our local lco's.

Bill, your right. This is a great networking opportunity. Other networking opportunities, include, the many green industry associations and their trade shows representing the state, as well as education sessions offered by manufacturers, dealers and the short course program at Rutgers. It's amazing just how many green industry companies are in this state and how few know each other.

Exactly, everyone try to get in on this. Maybe say which area of Jersey your from and mention some of the trade shows, associations and such that the state provides and that we can take advantage of. I'm in Manchester (Ocean County) and the only Jersey trade show that I know of is the Pants convention in Atlantic City, which I believe is more for landscaping than lawn maintenance.

Bill, PANTS will no longer be in Atlantic City, as they have moved it back to Valley Forge. MAHTS, the EP Henry paver show was also in Atlantic City, but has been cancelled due to trying a roving presentation, similar to the Techo-Bloc showcases.

MANTS, is held in Baltimore in January and is a worthwhile show for information about plants and supplies. Both of the major organizations representing landscapers in NJ do shows involving training and exhibit halls.

The NJLCA show will be February 25 at the Meadowlands Exhibition center in Secaucus and the NJNLA show will be January 14 & 15 at the garden State Exhibition Center in Somerset. Both have some classes and a large exhibition space with vendors including mower sales, equipment dealers, nurseries, hardscape manufacturers and suppliers as well as business services. Either or both shows are worth attending and the prices are usually quite reasonable.

Wow! I can't belive the MAHTS show is not going to be in the format it was last year. I wonder how they will do all the hands on workshops if they do them at all.

Dreams To Designs
12-03-2008, 10:52 AM
From what I have been told, there won't be any type of workshops. They will be meet and greet seminars with information about the company, new products and colors and new programs as well as an overview of the existing products.

Looks like quality education and information will be harder to come by, but that's not EP Henry's responsibility. All the manufacturers of pavers and walls along with the ancillary manufacturers must see a need for more and better education in the hardscape field. Having a national show is great, but regional shows will bring in more attendees and introduce contractors to the products and services available in their own areas.

I guess we'll have to rely on the local suppliers to offer workshops and training. I mean I've been going to CCM for landscaping but there's not very much in the way of real hands on learning.

CCM has some great programs and you should look into what is offered at Rutgers in the professional landscape programs. Unfortunately the Rutgers hardscape program is geared towards introduction rather than tips, techniques and trends.
http://www.cpe.rutgers.edu/programs/landscape.html

There are consultants that come out to your job with you from start to finish, and be part of the design process. Many manufacturer reps can also be knowledgeable and helpful on projects.

The professional short course are at the New Brunswick campus, in what used to be called Cook College. It has some new name now, but same great location. The landscape architecture department is also located there. it's about an hour and half north for me as well, but the classes are definitely worthwhile.

Matt

Dreams To Designs

Matt, I'll definitely be there for many classes. The water management and drainage class is this month on the 17th, and that is an essential program for anyone doing any type of landscaping or hardscaping. Drainage is such an important, overlooked aspect of landscapes, and it's a good money maker as well. Are you thinking of attending some of the short courses?

As long as the student numbers warrant it, I will be at the Basics of Plant Materials for Landscape use as well as Beds and Borders and I would certainly like to attend Principles and Practices of Landscape Design as well as a couple of the new design specific programs. Every program has real world instructors that are performing what they are teaching, for paying clients.

Dreams To Designs

Bill, you can definitely put them in, but they likely won't look very good. The cold has been brutal along with the winds. If they are planted properly and mulched in, you should get a good show come spring.

If you are looking for some winter color for a good client, check out Hellebores. They are not at all cheap, but the show they put on in the winter is amazing. They are perennial and will continue to expand the clump year after year. They make an amazing winter ground cover. Depending on your climate, they may completely disappear in the heat of summer or just look very disheveled, but you can cut the evergreen foliage back.

Anyone going to make the Water Management & Drainage class, next Wednesday at Rutgers? http://www.cpe.rutgers.edu/courses/current/al0602ca.html

There's a;so the Basics of Turfgrass Management on Tuesday at Rutgers. I attended this class when it was taught by Barbara Bromley and it was excellent. By the end of the day, we had a much better understanding of grass and it's maintenance. The class is now taught by another Rutgers instructor, but I have not attended any of his programs. http://www.cpe.rutgers.edu/courses/current/at0406ca.html

Speaking of education over the winter, I'm planning on doing some as well.

I have some questions if anyone has any info. to help

Classes I'm thinking of attending:
Atlantic city ICPI certified installer (by johndeer)
Rutgers SRW class
Rutgers Water feature class
Rutgers Intro to plant identification class (not the more expensive one)
Rutgers Pruning class
Rutgers Advanced Pruning class
Rutgers Principles of Landscape Design
Rutgers Landscape Lighting class

Anyone taken any of these classes before? Personal Suggestions? Anything a waste of time?

They offer a paver installation course as well

I have been in the industry for a few years, but like it seems others are doing, I just have free time and wan't to broaden my knowledge

Dreams To Designs
12-18-2008, 12:57 PM
The ICPI class will definitely be a good investment. The information and standards they profess are a great guideline. If anyone other than those in the industry knew what the ICPI was the certification would be much more meaningful.

I have been involved with all of the Rutgers classes and know you will get some good information from all of them, depending on what your actual skill and knowledge level is and what you want to know. The courses they offer for the certificate for are as a group, are an excellent source of primary information and should be concentrated on before venturing into the more glorified programs. As an example, the knowledge about soils and drainage are a precursor for installing pavers, SRW's, landscaping, and turf or plant maintenance.

The Paver class is a very baisc program that maybe redundant to the more intense and certified ICPI program.

The SRW class will cover the basics of wall and step building.

The Water Feature class will enlighten you to sustainable pond building and pondless features.

Intro to Plant ID is a course anyone that fancies themselves as a landscaper should take and have a much better understanding of how and what grows around us. The instructor in that program is amazing, and you will be given a great deal of information and work in two days. If you can afford it, the Basics of Plants for Landscape use is an intense and mind expanding experience. In the new 5 day format, the information will come fast and vast, but if you are up for the challenge and you really want to understand what plant goes where and why, this is that next step.

The Pruning and Advanced Pruning classes will teach you the proper ways to prune what, when, how and why. They will teach you that gas powered shears or not the first pruning tool you should be reaching for and why, and when they are appropriate. You spend plenty of time outside practicing your new knowledge.

The Principles of Landscape Design is taught by two excellent, knowledgeable and practical instructors. And yes, they are artistic and talented as well. This course will give you the basic theory with flair and style.

The Landscape Lighting class is taught by the owner of Cast lighting and will give you the basics of installing lighting using a hub system and some basic design, marketing and selling information.

Kirk

Kirk,
Thanks for the detailed information.

The main reason I will probably not take the Basics of plant for landscape use is because the first day overlaps with the last day of the ICPI course (the only one in NJ). I did not want to miss the first day of an expensive and fast pace class.

I think I will def. skip on the paver class at Rutgers. Like I said I have knowledge and have installed a handful of successful patios/walls, but just wanted to be more "educated."

I would like to possibly take the drainage class if they reschedule it for later. What is the name of the specific soil class you said would be a good precursor for me.. "soil and plant relationships?"

I'm looking forward to taking the Pland ID and pruning class. I know all the basic plants many central NJ landscapers use, but want to much more confident on estimates. Often times at my maintenance accounts, I am not sure when to trim some plants and it's embarassing.

Thank you.

Kirk

i took all those courses and many more years ago....good stuff! who's still teaching up there, any idea? i had bruce (doc) hamilton, pete mahoney, steve kristoff and larry benz...all good guys. i still run into steve every now and then, hes got a specialty nursery out in millstone. i'd like to see them put together a course on green roofs....i think it's gonna be a really good niche for guys that get into it sooner rather than later.

Doc, retired last year, but may make an appearance in the Basics of Landscape Plants. Steve is now the leader of Basics of Landscape plants along with Derron Dover and a couple of really great filed and classroom staff. Larry left the programs two years ago and the Basics of Design class has not been held since. Pete is still teaching in the Home Gardener's School, both spring & fall. Steve is very active in teaching during the short turf program and the two year program. Bruce Crawford is now the director of the Rutgers Garden and teaches the Principles of Landscape Design course with Dominic Mondi and Bruce Neary is the course coordinator in quite a few programs.

The green roof idea is a good suggestion, but in keeping with the Rutgers tradition, we would need an instructor that has extensive experience in that subject, and there are not a lot of those folks out there yet. Lot's of folks with ideas and suggestions, but not a great deal of research or track record.

i hear you on the green roofs...i do think its gonna be a big thing in the next 5-10 years...that in conjnction with water conservation.

Welcome to NJ, if you don't like the weather, wait until tomorrow, it might not be better, but it will be different!

We had rain, a few times with some snowflakes mixed in, but little else.

Shade tree, what year did you attend the basics of landscape plants? Mid 90's maybe? They are a great bunch of guys and proud to be able to call them friends. There are some new and interesting classes you may want to check out. The program is really evolving and there has been an influx of new blood and ideas. Unfortunately, the economic situation postponed some new ideas for a future date, these classes will keep getting better and a few may even come to a location near you and everyone else.

Bill, hope all went well with your procedure today, Monday. looks like Thursday maybe the best day for me as well. What is your plan of attack, and how mobile will you be? It will be the last day of the show, and depending on turnout, some vendors may try to get out early. Depending on what interests you, you could take an hour or the day to stroll the trade show floor. usually takes me a day, and I may visit a class if close, but just going for the vendors and contacts.

I did not know that Janet Moyer taught the lighting class at one time. Now there's a class that had to be a lot of fun.

I didn't discover the classes till 2001, and I have stayed on to help out a bit. You would likely enjoy the Principles of Landscape Design class with Crawford and Mondi. I plan on attending that, if time allows. There is now a group of classes that make up a Landscape Management Certificate program.

if i remember right, it was a spur of the moment type situation where she happened to be available at said date and they made a one day class out of it. it was right around the time she had a book published, as i bought a signed copy that day.

i kinda want to to go back and take the clt exam, but a part of me says i already took the classes back then and know the material and have been in the trade for close to 20 years....what can it really do for me?

A lot has changed in 20 years and so has the information and format. You would be surprised at the cross section of students, from 18 year old lawn entrepreneurs to 70+ year old estate gardeners and everyone in between including municipal workers and landscape architects.

The amount of information and delivery method have also been updated. You are a former student, you you are entitled to a discount on any class that you have taken in the past, plus give the office a call and speak with Karen Tizzano and see what she maybe able to do for you.

There is also the participation and networking opportunities which seem to benefit quite a few.

Thanks man. Yeah it sucked but I just wasn't nearly up to it yet. Just now, I'm starting to feel a bit better. I'll tell you what, though...my shoulder must have been pretty f'd up because the procedure was supposed to be arthroscopic, but they found other problems in their that they couldn't see in the MRI's and there was nothing arthroscopic about it. I'm going to have a huge scar after it all heals up. The staples should come out next week.

There must be thousands of landscape/maintenance contractors in the sate but few seem to know about or understand what's going on. We are trying to stop the bill from passing in it's current form by writing to our senators, petitions etc. There are now 6 regional chapters of the NJLCA around the state. If you're not a member yet you should look into it but you don't have to be a member to help.

Now it's time for flower show season. NJ show is in about a week and Philadelphia is the first week of March.

Bill, if we all wear our company colors, we should be easy to recognize. Enjoy the Techo show, it's a thought provoking event and you should get some good food as well. Take the opportunity to network if you can. Your rep is Jason Guidry and he will be there. Introduce yourself and ask him about contractors in your area to work with. You should be able to make a few connections.

The NJLCA show should definitely prove to be interesting. I hope to be there and will be wearing Rutgers crimson attire. I get to go incognito.

I just figured that you guys might appreciate this. It is a little long, but it's hilarious. I had to do some editing. lol

Jersey Born, Jersey Bred, Jersey Trash Till I'm dead!

Yeah, I'm from Jersey, have been all my life. I'm gonna give you everything about jersey, the good, the bad, and the ugly.

First... New Jersey people are conceited. It's true. We hate everyone else. And we think we are better than everyone else. And we never stop talking about how great jersey is. Then we tell people to "shut the f up" when they tell us all we talk about is jersey. I just recently was in the south ... and I can honestly say, that I do think I am better than them. It's not my fault. It's cause I'm from jersey. My friends and I were the rudest, most obnoxious people there. Everyone just stared at us. Then we saw other rude people, and I asked them where they were from. They said jersey.

Why are New Jersey people self centered? Because we have reason to be.

Next, some of the most famous people have come from our state. Just to name A FEW... Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen, Kevin Smith, Whitney Houston, Martha Stewart, Lauryn Hill, Catch 22, Anne Hathaway, Queen Latifa, My Chemical Romance, Bon Jovi, Jack Nicholson, Bruce Willis, The Four Seasons, Danny Devito, Tom Cruise .. and the list Goes on.

Not only do we have famous people, we rank in the top 10 of smartest states every year.

Not only are we smart & famous...we're rich. Bergen, Somerset, Morris, & Hunderton counties rank in the countries top 15 richest counties. And despite the slums of Newark (yes, Newark, not New -ark) & Camden which are some of the countries most dangerous places to live, we have 4 of the top 10 safest cities to live in the US.

And we smell? Yeah, we do. New Jersey smells like AS*. On the turnpike, between exits 14 and 17. That's like, 5 percent of the entire state.. Bayonne, Port Newark, and Secaucus. And the surrounding areas. That's it. The majority of the state smells like trees. Because the majority of the state is trees. In fact, three of New Jersey's cities rank in the countries top 10 least polluted cities. So shove it.

New Jersey is ideal. I live 20 minutes away from New York City and 45 minutes away from the famous jersey shore, which by the way is amazing. You think your beach is better? F you. Why do you think MTV's true life had an episode titled "I'm a Jersey Shore girl." Because it's the best f'ing shore in the country.

My house is 3 minutes to the nearest mall, 5 minutes to the next, and a 10 to the next. I just Counted 7 malls within a half hour of my house. Find me another state that has all that to offer.

Yeah, we have accents. Who gives a sh*t? Everyone has an accent. And no, we don't say "Joisey." We do say "cawfee and tawk." But I can tell you it's a hell of a better accent than you bit**es from the south.

Hungry? Don't worry. We have 24 hour diners. A million of them. We also have Hoboken which has some of the finest places to eat. And you have not had real Italian food until you come here. Okay?

And WE can't drive? NO.. YOU can't drive. In the south the speed limit signs read: speed limit 60.. minimum 45. WHAT? That's why you people can't drive. Who has a minimum speed limit? New Jersey drivers like pissing other people off solely because of the reputation. This is what we will do...just so you know...if we see an out of state license plate, we'll tailgate your as*. Probably because you're only doing the speed limit & we want to go 20 over. Then, we'll cut you off... and go slow in front of you. Because we can. And because when you go home you're gonna complain about us. We like it, it doesn't bother us….it’s what we want.

We like fast things. Things move too slow in other states. You can tell that someone's from New Jersey by the way they walk. They walk really fast and have a strut that says "I'm better than you."

Music scene? Amazing. Remember Hunka Bunka?...DJais, and last but definitely not least... TEMPTS!!! Enough said. We also have the best local bands... The rap scene, I don't know much about that, but I know it's there…& I know it's good. Obviously the club scene. You don't know club music until you come into New Jersey... SERIOUSLY. - - - - "We don't pump our gas ... we pump our fists."

Just shut the f up. If you go to Seaside boardwalk or Belmar. You'll probably see some of the trashiest, skankiest girls & some of the most guido, gelled up hair, armani exchange wearing boys that take too many steroids and have too much sex… But they are gorgeous and they know how to dance better than anyone you ever met in your life. So yeah, the stereotype that all jersey chicks are trashy, is true ... but only if you go to Seaside. That's pretty much it. The rest of the state is full of confident, beautiful people that speak their mind.

The majority of Jersey people are Italian, or wish they were. We drink & smoke way too much. Oh yeah and we throw the sickest parties ... in the woods.

What else? Giants, Jets, Nets, and of course the Devils. They're better than you. So shut the f up. And we have more Yankee fans than New York City. Come to jersey with a sox hat on ... I f'n dare you!

And oh yeah, we say "yo." Often. And "f." I don't complain that you say "y'all" so don't complain that I say "yo."

To sum up New Jersey, yeah, most of the stereotypes are true, probably for about 5 percent of the state. The rest of the state is beautiful.

And yeah, we hate you. We love ourselves. Wanna know why? Because all you bit**es hate us. How would you feel if the other 49 states spent all their time talking ****? We deserve to be our own country cause we're that cool.

"Rise up, my fellow New Jerseyans, for we are all members of a confused but noble race. We of the state that will never get any respect, we who bear the cruelness of the forever uncool. A chip on the shoulders of those with forever something to prove. And even with this wonderful hall of fame, we know that there's another bad Jersey joke just around the corner.
But fear not, fear not! This is not our curse. It is our blessing. For this is what infused us with our fighting spirit, that we may salute the world forever with the fabulous Jersey state bird. And that the fumes from our great northern industrial area, to the ocean breezes of Cape May, fill us with the raw hunger, the naked ambition and the desire not just to do our best, but to stick it in your face. Theory of relativity, anybody? How about some electric light with your day? Or maybe a spin to the moon and back? That's right. And that is why our fellow Americans in those other 49 states know that when the announcer says, "And now, in this corner, from New Jersey..." they'd better keep their hands up and their heads down, cause when that bell rings, we always come out swinging. God bless the Garden State."
-Bruce Springsteen

If you want to continue as a mow & blow service or a lowest bidder fert & spray service, no need to attend. This is for those who want to expand their horizons and think outside the box.

Dr GreenCare for Troops Volunteers in New Jersey !

I am writing to you for some assistance. Would you all be so kind as to review the list below. This list is cities and zip codes belonging to our registered military families that are without assistance in NJ. Please let me know if any of you are able to assist any of them. As most of you already know, I work this program alone for Project EverGreen in all 50 states. To date, I now have more than 7600 military families registered with our program and more than 2100 incredible volunteers. I am working as quickly as I can to (manually) match our military families with volunteers. I am finding myself a little behind and I am asking for your assistance.
Thank you.

I hope that this does not inconvenience any of you and I do appreciate your time and support very much !

Respectfully, Joy.

Anyone come up with any new bulk root mulch suppliers.
Best i can do so far this year is $12 a yard delivered from Benoit.(80yrds)

Looking for more choices.

Anyone doing dyed mulch check out SJAP 14-16 a yard for dyed delivered.
(75 yards)

Are we going to have a late or early spring in NJ this year? Personally I think its going to be an early one, the ground hog in my backyard has already been out and about for at least 2 weeks.

While on ground hogs, anyone have any advice to get rid of them? I have already trapped 5 last year, and there is at least another one back this year. I have the trap out, with food in it but he keeps walking rite past it.

Last time I checked it was supposed to be decent all next week so I'm guessing spring is about here. Sorry, I don't have any advice on the groundhogs dude.

South Jersey Pitman area, who wants a "job lead"?
I have a friend in that area who "wants green grass" and is pretty much clueless on where to start... I'm no good to him way down here....

That's not cool! I've been doing a few estimates and also picked up two yards in my mowing areas for greencare for troops. The families are so thankful. I believe I got my friend Lou to also sign up for a yard or two. I'm trying to set up a landscape job for the PLANET day of service also. Besides that, just doing estimates, advertising to targeted areas and finish getting the last of the renewals in. Lost a few customers but nothing too major.

been doing alot of estimates last few days, hoping to land a few of the jobs. Have had a few lawns cancel, and quite a few that havent returned contracts yet. Starting to get worried about this year

I hear ya..that's kind of how it's been with me too. I honestly think it also has to do with the weird weather. It's been cold on and off so not everyone is thinking about their grass yet. Hopefully everything will be cool this year.

at least i'm not the only one whos numbers are off from last year, I def agree with the weather being a culprit in it. Waiting for a few days, weekend, of 60 degree days.

Picking up more than I am losing so far. Prices seem to be stable. Have picked up almost a dozen very unhappy customers from my least favorite Sprinkler/Lawn company competitor. Have also had many new good applicants for work this year.
My advertising campaign starts April 3 with 14K postcards, hoping for a good response again.

did like 6 cleanups today and then had the guys hand out door hangers......people are calling like every few days...its been cold here the past few days and people aren't really thinking about their lawn or mulch installs. April is usually once it really starts to get going.

Most people calling now were very unhappy with last years service provider.

Spring has been good so far. Some cancels, been picking up new accounts. I've had more prepays than ever. Wholesale product sales are way up, more lawn companies are feeling the pressure to offer greener services than ever.
