Hello all,

First let me say I'm excited to finally have my first house and it has a pre-installed irrigation system. Ive tinkered with sprinklers my whole life as a hobby (fixed families and friends systems) so I'm excited to finally have my own.

I have St Augustine (Floratam) grass in my front yard. The builder of the house used exclusively 4" Rain Bird Uni-Spray pop-ups. However the system was installed before the sod was laid and now multiple sprinklers are well below grade, and once the Floratam starts growing they will only get deeper.

My question:

Should I just put in 2" risers to bring the heads up to grade or switch to a 6" sprinkler, as Ive read a couple places a 6" is preferred for St Augustine grass? If I do upgrade to a 6" I will probably go with the 1800-PRS-SAM heads as like I said I finally have my own system and I would like the very best.

Thanks for your expert input
Kyle

Do they use swing joints in FL?

IMO, I would go with 6" SAM/PRS units. That's all we use in turf. I'm not familiar with Augustine but one thing I can't stand is when the grass is cut down around the head so it doesn't interfere with the spray. Tacky and unprofessional.

Yes, my current system is using swing joints ( actually looks like funny pipe) but there doesnt seem to be enough give to lift it 2".

How tall do you cut the Augustine during the summer? 3"?

Yes 3-3.5"

Its still pretty new sod (laid 3 months ago) and its already below grade. Thats why Im wanting to make the switch, because when the grass is at its peak the heads will be 3-4" below the level of the grass.

We have lots of swing joints. We call them "bars".
Seriously - I use RB's swing joints for rotors, regular funny pipe for sprays.

You should have enough lift - dig back to the PVC fitting.

Yup. And a 6" head is the way to go.

I use 4" 1800s. Why 6" if grass is cut 3" to 3.5"? I am open to change. Just curious why?

I hate to see the "string trimmed" fountain head. But not necessary with a 4" on grade.

The 4 inchers will not be high enough for the days just before the grass is cut.

Also the short heads on funny pipe in sandy loose soil can move around and pop out of the soil sometimes.

.

1. If cut at 3", the grass can easily be 4 to 5" for a few days before it's cut.

2. Heads tend to settle/sink, so that extra 2" helps.

Gotta pay the dues to get the bad boy; they'll work on any receiver harness and any clock. I'd buy the harness that that cowboy in Texas makes; what's his name?

Work an e-bay schedule into your daily routine. No matter what your politics, you've got to see a MAJOR crash coming. Those who can stay afloat and keep some extra cash around will be in a sweet position by spring.

I heard some rumors that RM is planning a new remote that might be closer to the Calsense with the ability to measure voltage and program from the field.
