ViceNut has a couple Leylands to plant Sunday. Rained too much today to get on the grass but he picked them up today. Customer tired of neighborghs junk. Wanted big as we could find 12'

Those are nice. They'll be green year-round also which is great so they'll never see the "junk".

Seems every time i've planted arborvitaes which are similar to those is because the customer wants to block the view of the neighbors junk.

Ive noticed in the first picture, how beautiful the Crepe Myrtles were in their fall color. We have millons of Crepe's in New Orleans, but they dont ever get that pretty in the fall.:cry:

Not really because he already gave them a price of $500 installed i think he said. So what do they care if they were happy with the price he could of used anything he wanted.

lets see what all topics can I hit...

1- ford couldn't tell she was back there. Especially not after having 8 pallets of wet fescue on there not too long ago. :dizzy: We've had the gooseneck for awhile now though, probably a year and 1/2 or so.

2- leave the drain? Hope you're kidding. We don't do that kind of work. Its a yearly contract customer, but even if it wasn't, we would never leave it. Pipe clogs, gutters back up, yadda yadda yadda. Not our line/quality of work we are known for.

3- Not sure what kind of dirt you have redmax, but this red clay sucks. One of our biggest reasons for buying the auger way back when, plus, its a lot easier.

yeh we should have! Now that I think about it, we should have left the straps and burlap wrapped around the trees too! That way we get to come back and charge them again! ;)

that was a joke dont get bent out of shape. but i wasnt joking about the mats to run the t190 on. i know it has tracks and low ground pressure but they still rut a dry hard lawn let alone a wet yard. i always run on plywood or old 1 1/2'' thick concrete forms.

Junior M
11-17-2008, 10:22 PM
Oh, just never seen it in your pics before, and red clay is the biggest freaking headache ever! When you tried and grade it out it digs out in big chunks and then you cant smooth it out because it's nothing but chunks of crap, and dont even think of trying to hand dig in it without a mattox, and dear god dont ever go near it when its wet! My driveway still has stains from a muddy red clay job back in May!

typically we would on an existing yard like that, but it dried out, and it was thick, thick zoysia. Plus, we only had to transport the trees straight to the holes, not a whole lot of wear on the grass.

I've seen it and worked it first hand and with a Cat skid with tracks like yours. Nasty unforgiving crap. Just the color is unique. Our dirt is black compared to that.

You can tell redmax has never tried to dig a hole in red clay when its so hard a pic ax will bounce off it, or so muddy 10 pounds of it sticks to your shovel and you have to scrape it off each time before you get another shovel full.
I hate the stuff but its all we have here.

you should invest in those alturna mats best investment i made yet so much better then lugging around plywood that breaks all the dam time and these mats interlock with each other to if you want them to. Plus it looks so much more professional than plywood. But if anything you should get a set of forks for that walk behind i used to put in leylands all the time with my bobcat mt 52 it makes alot less of a mess on the lawn. Better then bringing the t190 across the lawn and yes my bobcat mt52 did lift big leylands like this

ViceNut
11-18-2008, 07:45 PM
the trailer is a longhorn (i think) and its a 25'er, 20' flat with 5' dovetail. The auger is a 36"

I just cant see much use for the forks on the vermeer, because it may pick up some trees, these possibly, but others I doubt it. Plus the edge from the grass to the mulch bed was a decent drop, and it would've tipped like no tomorrow on that. Not a chance it would pick up a pallet of sod, so just dont really see it justify buying a set for it too.

No actually i have worked it and dug in both dry and very wet conditions. I've been down south before so i do have a little first hand experience. its quite a bit different than my soil up north here.

it getting stuck on your shovel isn't the worst part. getting stuck to the bottom of your shoes 6" thick and so heavy you cant even walk. errrrrrrrrrrr :hammerhead:

Whats worse than that is getting your boot stuck in it, that stuff has some awesome suction power, enough to pull your boot right off...

Just curious, do you partially expose the roots when you put those in? I never trust the places that grow these trees so I expose most of the roots and snip any that look like they may be a possible girdling root. The other benefit is that so much of the weight is gone that you can muscle them around by hand if you need to. I guess its not windy there? I don't see any stakes.

ViceNut

It gets pretty windy sometimes, especially this week its been real windy, but these trees were so big there was really no need to stake them.

ViceNut

Usually not windy here. Has been windy this week though. Trees were big. No need to stake. Easier?

P.Services
11-22-2008, 11:52 PM
thats the reason to stake a tree.... because a tree like that is big and is just like a big sail to catch wind. now if it was some tree like a service berry or a dogwood of the same size i would say yeah no need to stake it has a big root ball and very little "mass" to act as a sail. its when they have been soaked in good and its all mud around them and in the hole that they will tip over.

Hate to dig up an old thread but Prez i have a question for you. I priced out the vermeer s800tx today and told him i wanted a 36" and 15" bit for the high torque auger and he said they didn't carry them and that he didn't know of a bit that large that would fit the attachment. Do you have any recomendations?
