what do you think about signs on telephone poles. I see a lot of advertising on poles, is this legal?

Is it legal? I dont know. Would I do it? never! If you want to advertise do flyers, door hangers, place mat adds (resturaunt) phone book, letter your truck and more, I dont look at poles for signs (Stop signs ect yes but flyers on poles no) I think you would be WASTING your time. To get results you need to target areas you want to service and go directly to them! Personaly for our kind of services its kinda lame to advertise on poles but its only my opinion!

I see signs all over the place, right or wrong it is happening. I have put them at street coners on a H-frame stuck in the ground but never on a pole. Some neighborhoods will not let you solicit with door hangers so it is post cards and/or signs right where they exit the neighborhood. Once you're in, you're in!!! I have got some very good accounts this way.

I believe it just depends where you live and city code- WHen I lived in Sandusky, Ohio I personally seen a police offcier make someone remove them. Besides the things shout--- kid with a lawnmower/scrub for hire.

The poles belong to the power company. (private property)
Not legal But bottom line it's up to the power company.

Stick them in the ground. then its only litter.

Our city just made it illegal not too long ago. They must enforce it because I havn't seen any signs, and I like it that way. We used to have signs all over the place, whether it be garage sales or the signs that have a phone number to call about weight loss...It's nice not having to look at that garbage anymore! I would check with the city to see if it is legal or not.

You post your one liner as fact or opinion?

To me unprofessional means: Contrary to the standards or ethics of a profession. When it comes to marketing just what is the standards and/or ethics in the lawn care business?

Would it be different for a solo operator as to a nation wide company?
Would it make a differents if it was located in Downtown compared to country settings?
Would it make a differents if it was a start up company or a well seasoned one?
I could go on forever................

When I started I did whatever was existential for my existence. I used post cards, doorhangers and yes those inexcusable signs. However my strategy was target select so I wasn't hanging 200 signs all over town. That would surly be a eyesore.
I had immediate sucess, I was so overwelmed that it startled me. Today knowing more than when I started, I can say No Way did doorhangers and post cards give me the jumpstart that the signs gave me. That was not unprofessional that was marketing my business. I cannot speak for any other area than Central Florida or do I know the statistics of traffic but my twenty or so signs were read by every home owner in the area I wanted to work.
It was a incredible experience.

My point is: unprofessional only for seasoned companys.
excellence for a strong start-up.

I wouldnt do it. You never know when the power company might be ready to make an example out of someone. Im sure your sign will have your phone number on it. That will make you pretty easy to find.

It is illegal nationwide acording to a friend who works for the electric co.

They are not public property and any advertising without the owners consent is tresspassing.

IMHO signs on a pole have a "fly by night" feel of doing business to them. Just as examples pointed out weight loss, insurance companies (would you call a number off a sign like this ?) .
After all, you are not advertising your yard sale.
And I believe it to be illegal as well.

Signs are cheap to make. Easy to put out and I have had better return on them than anything. At a light by my house in the afternoon you have to wait about 4 min to get through. The line is real far back. I put out 4 signs. So even if you moved up after the light changed my sign was there again. I had a bunch of calls. In the morning the signs would all be gone. I would go out about 1:00 in the morning and put them out again.

At $2 a sign and a marker I couldn't stop!

Everyone is going to have an opinion on this. If it gets you business, then good for you.

But my opinion is the same as Jeffyr's. When I see signs on telephone poles advertising weight loss or insurance I would never consider even calling them. They might be the most reputable businesses around, but seeing a sign posted on a pole tells me that they were too cheap to pay for their advertising.
Not sure if it is legal or not.

Well, lets see. Since there are no actually numbers on it, it can only be opinion. There is no way to make it a fact!!

I don't care if you started last week or 20 yrs ago, its still putting JUNK up all over town. If you want to be professional, act professional. Not putting up signs on poles like the neighborhood kids. Its an eyesore. The big billboards that companies use are an eyesore also. They just spend 1000 times the amount the signs you did cost. Its all an ugly mess, that takes away from appeal of a community. The community we are supposed to be trying to improve.

Yes this is my OPINION.

You ever thought of asking for permission to put them out?

Then it's not litter.

Our city and county codes say it is illegal and you will be fined for putting signs up on poles or intersection corners. Its also imo an eyesore No difference between putting up signs like that than littering. What if all business in a fairly large town decided "well if they can put up a sign on a pole so can we" 5000 signs on a pole lol

Putting signs on corners is illegal here without permission from the city.

Rodney,

You have just conducted a nationwide study using the LS group. It seems that about 1/2 the people here that posted find this kind of advertising objectionable in general (from a legal or professional standpoint). In other words, have views against it. I think it is safe to say that half the people on the street may think the same based on the other posts, which means half the people that see the sign will think less of your companyafter seeing it than they did before seeing it.

Does it get your name out on the street for cheap ?
Yes.

Is it a positive and effective form of advertising ?
Not in my opinion.
