If you plan on working out of it dont put 35's and a lift on it, keep your old dodge and put the lift on it. I think it looks really unprofessional, jmo.

You'll just tear the truck apart with all the mods. Invest the money into your business, or put it away incase you need to repair something on the truck. Must be nice to get a free truck.

Im working at his paving company as well. and I reallly need a lift and some bigger meats some of the job sites are swamps and Ive almost gotten stuck a few times with my 285 dueler all terrains so 35 are the next step up and a 4 inch lift isnt that much higher and is a pretty normal thing around here keep in mind I live in southeast georgia haha

hell im not saying don't do it...just be careful...
first some cheap mods...take off the muffler, makes it sound badass too
33's will be fine...i highly recommend All Terrains from BFGoodrich...i find they get roughly the same traction in most conditions as the mud tires, but make a lot less noise and wear a lot less then mud tires
a programmer will be fine, but the more you program the more negative affects it might cause (too much boost, too hot temps, etc...)
i am sure there is a Duramax forum somewhere online and they will have all the help you need

Put a 6 inch tip on it, and it will be very deep. If you get that tune, dont run it on that 100 horse setting alot, or else your allison will be toast fast. What Dmax is it? LLY, LB7, or LBZ?

its an 05 just like yours. and I guess I might try a straight pipe haha. and no it wont have my name on it my trailer will. and can I at least put a 2.5 inch revtek lift on it and look proffesional. It sits to low in the front and even when Im towing it barely barely sits like maybe a half inch. and I want it higher a bit. it has the tendecy to hit the front bumper cover when goin through ditches and such. and 35's???
Lawnworks
11-17-2008, 05:51 PM
From my research, you have to be careful w/ the chip... it looks like anything over 90hp will trash the tranny... and these allison are not cheap. As far as exhaust... I have to say the duramax straightpiped or even w/ a aftermarket muffler sounds like dogcrap. My truck came w/ a 4" ansa exhaust and I traded it straight up for a stock system. Air intake is great and all... but I think it is really just bullcrap... you get like 5-6hp on the dyno...
I wish my duramax sat a little higher, but I just don't want to sacrifice the ride.
TandM
11-17-2008, 06:01 PM

Mines not an 05...its an 07. Thats why yours is slow. 2.5 is better than 4"...You dont need 35's...but if you must, ive seen them on factory trucks.

dude take it from me. at work we have 05 duramaxes with Edge juice chips and the transmissions have been ready to drop out of the thing since 30,000 miles. now at over 50,000 miles the torque converter finally went out in one of them. that kind of power is rough on a duramax. but if u must id get a superchips tuner. and straight 5 inch exhaust with whatever brand intake u prefer. and i hope ur not going to tow a goose neck with that lift because u better lift ur trailer too lol. as far as tires go id go with the nitto terra grappler there a great set of tires and there not noisy on the highway.

Im a diesel mechanic. When you talk about putting programmers on your truck along with any other performance mod, the first thing you need is a good set of gauages to monitor your egt's and engine at all times. And as far as a diesel exhaust I would probrably stay with a single. When your talking about how fast you want it to go, sure you can make it do it, but I would watch it with a lift and bigger tires, much easier to tear a rear end out or drop a driveshaft. In other words be carefull what you do because you can simply demolish a good truck with certain mods if your not carefull, Believe me some programmers and chips put more power there than the truck can handle.

I dont disagree with an exhaust and programmer to give you a little more towing power and better fuel economy but you add the lift and big tires to that combined with working the truck and you will tear it up. The allison trans is the best there is but it can't handle the impossible.

I think your a young spoiled little kid, who does not have a clue about trucks let alone diesels. Your lack of common sense, and sense of entitlement will ruin a good diesel truck, Leave it stock. What did you do to deserve this truck? did you get a drivers license:laugh::laugh: Good luck keeping diesel in the truck when you Mod it out. Sure daddy will bail you out
Their is more than just "slapping" a programmer on these diesels, With the Auto industry on the verge of total failure it would be wise to save your money for simple maintenance; since parts for these trucks will become more expensive.

um.... lets see here nosparkplugs. lets try Ive mowed 3 yards for him for the past 6 years or so FOR FREE! and I have been doing quickbooks and estimating jobs for his road work company for about the past year for free! and I Run a hoe or a loader for him on weekends doin extra jobs for him for free! of course I love doing all of this for FREE! but he does pay for my clothes a roof over my head running water and food. I have paid for all my equipment so far. And he wanted a new truck so Im getting his old one. And sure I have no common knowledge about diesels when I work on them with our mechanic 4 days out of the week I probobly know more about diesels then you do. have you ever rebuilt a Mack ch 613 427 before? or lets try putting new heads on a wheel loader? Ive rebuilt about 5 different engines in my life all of them diesels.. And yes I know I can tear up the truck. which is why Im just putting a programmer on it and a small lift with a trans shift kit to keep the allison in good shape.

Leave it stock;especially if your going to work it, raising the trucks center of gravity may look cool, but does nothing to help you while towing a trailer.
I can tell you from years of lifting trucks, and modifying diesels, their is NO END with diesels you just keep adding fuel & air.
Get a head start on saving some money, save all the unessary modifications.
Here is My order of mods to keep a diesel working, without tearing it up
1.)Amsoil Synthetic Lubricant/Bypass filter
2.)Gauge's EGT, fuel pressure, boost, tranny temp
3.)FASS fuel systems
4.) cold air intake
5.) 4" exhaust
6.) Programmer
If you go with a Programmer first without the others, IMO your asking for nothing but trouble down the road.
Good luck, I would save your money KID

And I know it doesn't help with towing but the heaviest thing I will tow with this truck it two asphalt rollers which are about 6-7000 a piece but thats only every once and a while mainly just my little 6x14 with the scag. and a dual axle trailer with my tractor

The Amsoil By-pass filter will virtually elminate oil changes, and filters down to 1.5 microns your oil is analytically clean, I'm going on 74,550 miles WITHOUT a oil change I do UOA at 20,000 mile intervals.

I tell you from my own experience, modifications that can be SEEN or HEARD
raise a vehicle's profiling factor, that is, it can attract unwanted attention.
Police included, and it's not a matter of doing anything wrong it is a matter of
I don't want the police getting but so close of a look at my car, for any or no
reason I just don't need that right now.
I seen a guy in court the other day, fighting a case concerning oversize tires.
The young fellow won I think, but had he not insisted on sticking a thousand dollars
worth of the wrong rubber on the car the whole issue could have been avoided.
My point...
Come time to sell it, the more mods have been done the more it becomes yours.
By this I mean that past a point you may never be able to sell it, and while I am sure there might
exist someone with your exact eccentricity I am also sure it considerably leans the market of potential buyers,
so to be blunt nobody wants it.
The best vehicle in all aspects is purely Stock, plain jane rules.
A nice stereo, maybe some new tires fine...
But beyond that it's an issue of money, I would rather the owner have kept up on the basic maintenance
than having blown it all out on a bunch of bs that doesn't really DO anything for the car.
So they can keep their ricers, fart pipes too.
Good luck with the cops.
Y'all keep'm busy now, hear? :p

I remember when i bought my first diesel....I was 16 years old and bought the 96 in my signature. I wanted to turn it all up, maybe go to a few truck pulls.... All I have on it is an edge evolution, 80 horse setting, k&n intake, straight pipe, 285 75/16 BFG's, and now 220K miles and still running everyday. If there is nothing else to spend money on, then by all means dump it into the truck, and then into fixin what you break. I chose to A)pay off my truck, B) pay off a bunch of equipment, and C) invest a bunch back into the business. But that's how I did it, as was said, you're only young once, so have fun, but know what might happen.
