i like to use a very sharp round or flat point shovel, depending on the thickness of the turf... if its really think, a round point, otherwise a flat shovel... and you just want to scalp the grass... takes a little time to get the technique, you dont want to take out too much dirt... sod cutters have their use, but we rarely get one... heh, Weve scalped out some very large areas in our day with nothing more than a couple guys with shovels....

I like a long handled spade or square shovel.

Little bigger and I use a kick- sod cutter.

Bigger yet and I go and rent a sod cutter to do big areas.

If its a big area, rent a sod cutter. Thats the way to go.

Last year I was getting a sore neck bending over and jabbing the flat head spade under the sod and lifting it up. I tried a 6 tine fork and discovered that it slides easily through the root system and lifts up as one solid roll of sod. It was easier and quicker.
Probably would not work as well on a thinner turf, but definately worth a try. :)

Try a long handled spade for the tough areas, they work very well, especially the all steel versions. I have had decent success with a mulch fork to remove turf as well, but you can run into some tough spots that need a spade.

Go rent a sod cutter or buy a sod lifter. I would be lost without mine- a very useful tool
