i am running a 3/4 ton (8000 gvw?) truck with a 7000 lbs gvw trailer. It has commercial plates on the truck, but i do not have a DOT number.
I see a lot of landscapers with and without dot numbers. I realize one is needed when crossing state lines.
Where is the easiest place to get my dot number? I googled it and found some websites with a ".com" ending wanting 100 bucks for this. I thought this was something through the government only. On a gov. site they said i needed to pass a 150A safety test first, which i guess is this new "contriversal" law where they check trailer and truck for safety.
Where should i look in order to get my DOT number
Thanks in advance
do a search this has been discussed many times

JB1 thanks for the help, i looked there and only found info on CDL license and health card.
i am just wondering where people have gone (website?) to get their dot number. i went to http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/forms/public/online.htm and answered all the questions but it says i need to fill the 150a out within a certain amount of time, which i do not want to do untill spring time, but was wondering if theres another way to get my dot number for my truck

It should be free and easy to get, and yes I think you can do it online. Your local state police would know also. I've had mine too long to remember the details but I'll check it out.

You're correct to go to the FMCSA site, more specifically here-
http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/registration-licensing/online-registration/onlineregdescription.htm
Click on "step by step registration guide" and go from there. The questions are pretty easy. Getting the number is free and not too hard, some of the questions- you just have to answer "yes" to. Don't worry, you can get stuff in order later on. (example- "do you have a drug testing program implemented for all drivers?") Just say "yes" and you'll figure it out later....
PM me if you need help. The number is the easy part. You will then be on a "probation period" for like 18 months. You'll have to do a safety audit- they'll contact you in a few months for an appointment. There is a TON of BS to wade thru...many of the "rules" will not apply to you, but many do. Just start surfing around the FMCSA site- lot's of good info. AND congratulations on wanting to become compliant! You'll save money in the long run by not getting busted and fined.
