Watch out you don't end up like the guy who thinks he got ripped off because
the 20+ year old car he found for $300, after spending a lot of time and money
on fixing things, a year or so later it still can't be driven.

I told that guy to get used to it because he got what he paid for.
He was pissed :p

Tough luck I say, an automobile is not a gallon of milk we can just pick up at any store
like so much groceries, but I feel more than a few folks think of it as just that simple a task.

It isn't and it shouldn't be, a vehicle purchase is the next biggest purchase to buying a house!
So if it makes sense to save some money and do some research and take your time with
buying a house, it stands to reason the same thing is true of a car, or do as some do and
jump head over heels right in but don't be disappointed now if it doesn't work out.

That having been said...
500 to a grand is all the same, you will not find a truck capable of doing what we do that will last
at least one season for any less than (better read through) one thousand dollars and even those trucks are
usually in such a rough shape that you would be better off thinking along the lines of 1,400-2,000 dollars.

So start saving, start researching and start shopping around, if you do it right you might have a 3/4 ton within a year.

spend a little now, pay alot for repairs later. would you rather pay $500 a month in repairs or $500 a month financing something new?

If you buy a really ugly truck, you may find one that will go (and stop!) okay for under $1000.

I'ld recommend an early 1980's Dodge with a slant six. The engine usually outlasts the truck (weak points: exhaust gasket, emission control junk, carburator), the rust-proofing is the best of the period (part of what Chrysler fixed after their last federal bailout). The manual tranny (A-833) is okay. Don't count on towing over about 3000 lbs with it, however. Also, fuel economy with the 95 hp six will be a little less than a new truck with a 300 hp eight (13 mpg city, 19 highway if you don't drive too fast--you could get as low as 14 highway if you drive 75 mph--10 mpg city towing 3000 lbs).

You could even splurge and get a pretty one for $2000. :)
