Regardless of your brand loyalty? Would you keep your current truck or trucks, or would you consider selling. If your truck brand Ford, GM, Dodge went bankrupt. That has been a question that was thrown around during the congressional auto bail out hearings today. The Morgan Stanley "non-biased" financial advisor was asked that question today. His answer was short of a mass exodus not good, for the auto company or the owners. Really it would be a tough situation to be in?

I was thinking the same thing today. The water dept was out today fixing a leak in the ground today in front of my house. All ford trucks. The township uses all ford trucks. The town next door uses all GMC trucks. etc etc. You don't see any large companies, towns, etc using anything other then the 3 anywhere. What will they use? I pondered buying a truck and storing it for 10 years lol.

I think if any of the three take (our) taxpayer money we should have our trucks paid for, or get to skip some payments or something:laugh:. Since at some point you could be holding a void warranty, and trucks no one wants.

That is what its turning out to be. I looked at the municipalities around here in WI and about 90% of them use single axle Sterling as their main fleet truck, the rest are old L8000, Internationals, Fieghtliners, Peterbilts, and the very rare Deuce 'n' half AM General. So if Sterling is gone to the wind, tell these taxpayers they have to buy a new truck cause there 06 broke down and there is no parts to fix it.

There are enough of these trucks out there that someone will step up and fill the hole if any of the big 3 go out. But I seriously doubt they will go out. Probably file chap 11 and restructure or combine .

They won't be going anywhere. Hopefully they will file bankruptcy, get rid of the UAW, get vehicle prices down and be better than before.

I have no choice but to keep my ford until i get more paid on it or can sell it. It would not make a difference if they went bankrupt or not.

even if GM becomes no more, i'm pretty sure my trucks will still start when i turn the key. just because the manufacturer isn't making them anymore doesn't mean that my truck still isn't my baby. I'll keep mine till it dies, and if GM isn't around when that happens i'll buy the next best vehicle, the tundra.

True, but no Tundra for me... EVER.

As somebody said earlier, there are millions of these trucks on the road. Somebody will continue to make parts. In fact many of the parts companies are independent companies anyway, even the ones who brand there parts with Big Three logos. There may be problems with warranties, but most of us who work with our trucks run through the warranties so quick it wouldn't matter much to us anyways....

if any of the big three file bankruptcy, they are committing suicide. there will be no future for them. who will want to buy a truck from a company that has an uncertain future?? we bought extended warranties on our trucks so they better not do it!
what manufacturer will be left to fill the 3/4 and 1 ton market?? the big three have cornered this market for decades, can you imagine the chaos of what will happen if a company comes in with the only offering to this market, and it being their very first time??

They will all still be here if they go into bankrupcy. People need to get that out of their head. It would actually be great for us. The trucks would get cheaper, and be alot better! Your warranties willl still be there as well. They wont let those go.

Thats exactly right. Bankrupcy doesnt mean their out of business. However a banhrupcy will lead to a reorginization and a stronger future. The problem is it will also mean a immediate loss of alot of jobs.
Make trucks cheaper, thats funny.

i didnt mean that they wouldnt be here anymore, but if they file for bankruptcy their credibility would be hurt. and bankruptcy in this economy isnt the best thing right now.

no-one is going under....they will take out a BIG loan from the government most likely, regroup and restructure and sell better vehicles, probably a little cheaper too just to get people to start buying again. I dont think anyone is going under anytime soon. The government would suffer ALOT if any of them did.....and the government watches the big boys azzes for sure.

It makes you wonder how much cheaper these vehicle would be if they dropped their average employee pay from 78 to 53 like toyota... it is amazing they can even compete with toyota. The unions have just about choked themselves out of there jobs... that and all of these stupid regulations the gov't puts on vehicles.

I'm keeping mine if they file for chapter 11, it starts every morning why change if it's not broken. Also there not going anywhere, they just want a piece of the BS bank bailout. Hell I want a piece too maybe I should start complaining. It was stated on the news that they all came in on private jets to the meetings and in the last 9 months they gave over 50 million to the lobbies so that doesn't sound like there doing too bad.

Brockway trucks went under years ago (built near me, just used as an example), but I still see many on the roads, and the guys that restore these trucks still find parts for them.
My favorite part of the first senate hearing was when one of the panel members asked the big 3 CEO's 'What makes you so much better than any other business in this country? Should we bail out every business that has not done a good job? Do we really need 3 auto makers? cant we get along with 2 or 1 if one of your companies is doing a better job at running a successful business? All 3 of you come here with your pact to make sure we bail out all 3, but what if we could get more benefit by bailing out just 1 or 2 of you?' (Not a direct quote, but the basic idea of what was said, I was watching on an airplane w/ my 10 month old son on my lap)
In the end, it comes down to the past history of how they've run their companies. Many other large companies are feeling the hardships as well, but have planned better, maybe laid off employees, etc., but overall run their companies better to survive.
My opinion.

K-mart went bankrupt and survived. Harley Davidson also went bankrupt, survived and came back stronger. Would you buy a Harley? A bankruptcy would be the best thing that could happen to the big 3! They could then do away with the unions, restructure, cut loose a bunch of dead weight and come back a stronger company. I'll probably get some slack about the union thing but I would rather see a few people loose their jobs so the whole country doesn't have to pay higher taxes because of a bail-out. It is supposed to be a loan but do you really think that they will actually pay it back? If they are asking for billions of dollars for a bail-out, they should tender their resignation because they can not do their job!
The big 3 should have done something long time ago, this just didn't sneak up on them.........I have had all of them and they are/were junk.....
1996 Toyota Tacoma, 84K and its the best thing truck ever.....in 3 years I will get a Tundra and drive until I retire.......2020......
UAW caused it, so they can deal with all the crap!!!

Thanks, I got it new in 96, paid like 26k and people thought I was nuts, when I paid it off I think it was worth like 14k, which blow me away.....no issues, just the normal: tires, battery, oil...

If you're my age this is all just old news that likes to come around again, and again, every so often.

When you file bankruptcy, you still must be able to get loans to continue to do business:waving: even while restructuring:hammerhead:; here's the problem those lending banks that specialize in high risk lending are no longer their, and the banks approached buy congress to work with whom ever files bankruptcy first has made it clear their will be no loans. Here's the big three's credit worthness in order of best to worst: Ford Chrysler GM.
So Bankruptcy for any of the big three is certain death, as the economy, and lending climate stands now.

Indianapolis just purchased 85 Prius and Camry Hybrids to use a police cars. It's all up for debate with a bunch of people bitching because they would have been able to get the Malibu Hybrids cheaper.
Also, our town uses Subaru police cars.
I think the jackass big three are going to get bailed out so everyone can relax.
