I had some of the same questions when I started. I found a website that calculates all the taxes, all I had to do is fill in the blanks with gross pay, allowances, state, and other deductions. It free to use. Then I think they might have a link to a quick book payroll software to use also. So since I work a full-time job else where, I wanted to see how close it came to calculate my net or take home pay. So I enter all my info from my pay stub. It came close, the website took a few more dollars then what is taken out now. so it almost dead on to what I would bring home. here is the link: http://www.payroll-taxes.com/calculators.htm

If your successful , upwards of 35% , if you suck at what you do , its not that much.

You only pay taxes on the money that you put in your pockets after all deductions, health insurance, simple ira plan, etc etc.
If you don't think you can make a decent living in this industry maybe it's time to reconsider you plans for the future.
I started my business back in 2000 and every single season for he past 7 years have seeing 2 or more new companies emerge and at the same time the same going under but this season was so much different I didn't notice new companies but saw several call it quits mid season we actually were the opposite we grew 25-30% this year maybe we won't next season but I'm sure we will stay on business since we are financially capable.
