What is your favorite (lawn mower size) small engine?

Kohler is my sentimental favorite, but for reliability, power, weight, noise, efficiency, etc, I have to go with Honda.

Kubota 3 cylinder diesel 16.5hp built for Jacobsen mowers. Those engines are tough as nails.

I choose the Kohler air cooled V-twin 20 hp specifically. That motor while underpowered in some applications, but is a real work horse, and virtually bulletproof. Since day one Kohler has been there powering my ZTR's, helping me to grow my business. I am now getting out of gasoline powered equipment where ever possible, going diesel.

I Kawasaki engines on my three mowers, however the Honda's on my Little Wonder and Billy Goat are awesome. Effortless to start, quiet and little to no vibration.

The best small engine IMHO is any of the GX Series-Single Cylinder Engines.

How many of those do you have to run together to power a ZTR:laugh:. Those are great engines for running pumps not ZTR's

The poll is for favorite small engine, so Honda is still my answer and since they make the GX up to a 13Hp in theory you could run 2 together and make 26hp and it would be stronger, more fuel efficient and definitely more trouble free with the two engines then any other manufacturers single engine.
But thankfully they make this http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200343164_200343164?cm_sp=Customer%20driven-_-Recently%20Viewed-_-Category%20Page

our industry is like these trucks, it all depend on the dealer and how good service you can get, i am a die hard chevy man but luckly had no trouble if i did i would be s.o.l. just like where i work our products are very good but we make it the best because of our service , i guess i am trying to say you could have the best of anything but if you have bad service you should have bought the yugo:waving:

Until a year ago, I'd say Honda was number one, then Kaw, then the others. But after using the new Briggs Intec, I was a changed man. Changed oil after about 40 or 50 hours. Then ran it for another 250 hours without an oil change. Never used a drop of oil. Oil stayed fairly clean too (Castrol Syntec). Go figure??? Briggs finally now has an engine that compares?

Under 15 hp I'd buy a Honda

Over 15hp I'd by a Kawi or the newer Briggs

I have 25hp Kohler on my Cub Cadet GT3235 tractor that is the best small engine I own hands down. Next I would say its a tie between the 8hp Tecumsah on my snow blower, the Subaru 5.7hp engine on my pressure washer, and the 10hp B&S intek on my chipper. Next is the 18hp vanguard on my generator. If it didn't blow smoke just at start up, I would have put it right behind the Kohler. The 5hp Honda gx is my least favorite engine. It runs good and I've had no problems with it, but its a pain to start when temps drop below 50 for fall clean up.

When I used to work for a company that owned nothing but dixies, I fell in love with the Generac engine.

i have had good service out of briggs i/c's ( go ahead and laugh) got one with 2000hrs on it on a toro 36 that still runs like a top. i absolutely love the torque of the kohler command/command pro ( feel its stronger than a kawasaki) but the kawasaki's run soo smooth and seem bulletproof.

well now that i own a kohler, and have used it a while, i'd say between the combination of owning a kohler 19, and using a 2500+hour command pro sp on my exmark at my other job(i work as a supervisor for another company 4 days a week, work for myself 2-3 days a week) , and having used kawasaki's 15-25 hp, i'd say my favorite is kohler hands down, second briggs (older i/c, newer intek/vanguard) , last tie-kawasaki/honda..

my 1988 12.5hp briggs i/c on my toro proline has Never, never let me down and runs as good today as it did it 1988.. don't use any oil, and other than rebuilding the rewind starter has never had a bolt cracked on it..and honestly this mower will hang with any 36 exmark with a kawasaki that i have used at any time( have used several different exmarks) .....

and i am not kind to zero turns, every exmark that i have used that is kohler powered just kicks butt on high grass and running it hard and fast everyday...they just take it.. the mower fails before the engine..

and i know that i own a "wannabe lazer z or toro zmaster " for my company (riverbend) , but i run it as hard as i do any other zero turn.. from bushogging rough stuff to manicured bermuda, i have been impressed by kohler's performance time after time.. and 4 days a week i work for one of the best companies on the planet, and the lazer z i use there really gets hammered..and i have cut insanely high grass with it ( and a kawasaki powered john deere at my last company-t((((g(((n) and it kicks butt..

i am not saying a kawasaki is bad, they are far from it.. but hp for hp the kohler , to me, is much stouter..

the stoutest v twin by far though is the generac like dixie chopper uses, but they love gas..

I wish I knew the hours on my 1956 Locke with a Briggs. It was used daily for 10-15 years or so. It was sitting for 20 years and when I put gas in it it started and doesn't smoke, simply amazing. I mow the grass at my shop with it now. The owners were sticklers for oil changes.

I voted Kawa but the Kohler Command I have on one of my Hustlers is a close second.
