I tore this unit down. installed new lower bearing and installed a new carb kit. before I installed carb kit I tried starting unit with the old carb setup. it was flooding the crank case something terrible. I thought maybe I need to install a new carb kit. After doing so I tried restarting unit again and got the same results. fuel filling the crank case and leaking out the exhaust port. Any idea's what could be causing the flooding.

Hi No Bull, sounds like you've got a problem with the fuel metering needle/diaphragm.

Are you getting a spark ok? Is it being caused by excessive cranking and no ignition.

Remove the plug and crank the engine to get rid of the excess fuel. Let it stand for 1/2 hour to help it dry out.

Refit plug (after checking you're getting a spark) full throttle and no choke.

Can't help but think you've got an ignition issue here.

Good luck, Phil :ukflag:

It has great spark. I don't know how it can be the fuel meter or the diaphram when it is all new. Even with the plug pull out it sprays fuel out of the top of cylinder. Not unless the new fuel meter is out of adjustment. Not sure what it could be.

Have a look around here, it has the carb illustrations and how they set up.

Here's another good illustration showing how the carb/needle works.

No Bull, all you need to do is get the 9.0 ver from Acrobat, it's free, down load it and you then can save any Pdf file ( by clicking on the save icon) to any file you set up on your computer. I keep all my Pdfs under a file called Work, then you can read them anytime you want.

I downloaded the acrobat 9.0 tried to download both of the pdf files and nothing would come up. Not sure what the problem is. :(

You may just need to reset the adjustment of the fuel pump tang on the fuel inlet needle (equivalent of a float adjustment). IIRC it should be flush with the deck of the carb body.

Flush with the deck may not be right for the 55. I was able to load the pdf but it was slow. keep trying. I had the 85 which can be set flush. The other type needle has the lever set from 0 - .012" below the gasket surface of carb. Do you recall if your needle had a 90 degree bend on it from the pin to where it contacts the diaphragm, or was it more like a 110 degree bend and another toward the diaphragm? Like _/* or _l* (asterisk being the hinge pin). The angled one gets set with the clearance. The 90, flush. Hope this helps.
