How many cubic feet in a ............

OK math guru's, here's one for you. How many cubic feet are in a 32 gallon trash can??? Sometimes I'll have some mulch leftover on some jobs and I'll transport the extra mulch in trash cans to other smaller jobs. The trash can is 28 inches high and has a diameter of 20 inches. My estimate is 6 cubic feet. Is this close??

The answer to your math question is 4.2777777777778 cubic feet
The formula is V= pi*r squared * h
That is 3.14 multiplied by the radius squared. Multiplied by the height of the cylinder.
Or you can just use a scientific calc and put it in the Volume function like I did. ;)

Thanks Hubb. I was figuring 4 1/2 ( 27 cubic feet) trash cans to the yard for billing purposes. I guess I need to adjust!!! 6 trashcans would be closer to it.

:blob3: Having to deal with hydraulic formulas all the time another way to figure it out is..... There is 231 square inches in a gallon so 231 times 32 = 7392 square inches and there are 1728 square inches in a foot . So take the 7392 devide by 1728 and you get 4.2777777:p :p

8792 / 1728= 5.09 cu.ft

32 gallons of water x 8.345404 LB per gal. = 267.052928 pounds.
267.052928 pounds of water divide by 62.42796 pounds per cu. foot = 4.277777585 cu. ft.

I get the same thing that longslawn got, 5.09 when I plug it into the formula!
