Since you are in minnisota I can't imagine you would be able to do a whole lot of lawn services at all. Besides snow plowing you could try christmas decorating. That is starting to become more popular. It won't give you tons of money but some and some potential new customers for the upcoming season. Other than that I can't think of anything else that you would really be able to do in minnisota.
I don't really start preparing for the following season alot until January or February. Then I start getting my advertising info together, figuring out what, if any, new pieces of equipment I will need to buy. My season doesnt' usually start until April so in March I will start getting the equipment running and making sure that everything is in working order. I do just the usual stuff.

I get a few odd jobs like clearing brush, cleanup work, etc. It doesn't get as cold down here, so the winter is a good time to do cleanups on overgrown properties.

Why not market year round contracts to all your customers? If you service Mrs. Jones's property for $150/month during the growing season (Typically 9 months here in Oregon) Make it $125/Month for a 12 Month Contract, just like how a school teacher can take the 12 month pay and still get paid in the summer when schools out.

Firewood will keep you busy. It is hard work for low pay but if done right you can make money throughout the winter and survive.
Annual contracts is another option.
You can also get into the niche market of doing tropical planters for inside and get a maintenance contract for them.
