Never heard of Smith Vboxes but it looks nice(I like stainless:clapping:). It's all electric? The Fisher I had was a Honda and it ran good but the electric would be nice, no noise and no messing with gas cans. Are you going to cover the top with something? Have you ever used Magic treated sand/salt?

yes all electric.. I sold my western with a gas engine its just became a pain after a while filling it up with gas checking the oil then hoping it starts in the freezing weather where it did most of the time because i kept it in my shop but still more to go wrong and yes its def noisy. I will keep it inside my shop. What is magic treated sand/salt?

Wouldn't it have been cheaper to just get a tailgate spreader?
I thinks the most trouble free system to have would be hydraulic.

yeah it was cheaper to get a tailgate spreader the thing i don't like about the tailgate spreader is you have to to pick the bed up as you go, one wrong move and your can cause a lot of damage. Other thing with the tailgate spreader is you have the salt loaded in the dump truck sitting there all day and night compared to it sitting in the spreader not rotting away everything . I already have a hydraulic speader as well one my 3 yard dump truck

Probably I would guess but I personally don't like the up/down with the box. Once things are all set with a Vbox it is poetry.
Magic is some brown molasses type stuff you spray on sand or salt and is supposed to work in colder temps and not be as corrosive. If you do it to their specs you can spread sand or salt at much lower rates and sometimes have a residual effect which can save on material. I have played with it, never did too much as it was hard to get a hold of here.
I had a tarp made for my sander but would make a hard piano hinged cover on the next one. I kinda miss sanding, probably the biggest money maker in snow removal.

Why wouldn't you buy a sander that fit your box in length?
Use fluid film twice a year, it does a great job

Maybe spray the inside of bed down with diesel?
Gravel Rat
12-16-2008, 08:23 PM
Use fluid film you can get it in 5 gallon pails and use a pesticide sprayer to get the back of the truck just don't get overspray around the brake drums
You can't use a tailgate spreader on a contractors box the sides are too low and beside the fact its hard on the dump hinge pins with the box tilted up.
The highways maintenance contractor here uses slip ins in the 5 tons, tail gate spreaders haven't been used for years.
Don't use diesel fuel it stinks too much if you get it on your clothes when your at the back of the truck then your going to smell it all day in the cab.
Anyway you slice it rock salt rots and rusts steel nothing you can do about it.

Holy hell, that's a smart idea!
Then it gets loaded by one of the bigger skids, but I noticed the salt box is narrower than the box of your truck, does the skid steer have enough forward reach to load?

You must know it all???? We use tailgate spreaders here all the time. State uses them, contractors use them. The sides of his bed are plenty tall as I'm sure if he loaded it to the top of the rails he would be close to max load weight??? He does have side boards.
And the only reason I say to use diesel is that it is cheap and available.

I liked the controls, and visibility of the cutting edge, the cab was comfortable, more room to stretch out, I didnt like the dash, everything was cramped together and black so it was hard to see. I hated getting in the cab and that stupid squeeling noice, Oh, and the visibililty out of the rear and sides sucked! and it was really underpowered,, so over all it was an okay machine...

Well you have to spec the bucket to the job. I have 6 dirt buckets for 2 machines. Bucket size and configuration is a major overlooked area when getting the most out of your machine.

I dont think NEFF rental was to concerned about what bucket we got at 6:30 on a Saturday morning when there not even suppose to be there..
Sorry, mrsops, its all my fault... I'll push the blame off on KSSS!

I give you an inch and you take a mile. The 220 was the closest BC has ever come to getting me to switch, however that does not mean that it was close enough to make it a difficult choice between the two. Running them both side by side the CASE was more precise in the controls and put more power to the ground. It recovered much faster and felt more nimble.
I don't find any difference in the side view between the two. They are built almost the same. There really is not 2 cents of difference between the two in visibility to the side. As far as visibility to the rear the CASE has a much lower cowling than does the BC. Allowing for a better sight line. The S-3 machines are really sloped and impoves visibility even more.

Did a little upgrading to my new spreader check it out added a nice mattress frame with some heavy duty plastic it stops all the salt from shooting all on my hitch, mudflaps and especially underneath my truck where it will rot it out big time. Also put 2 strobes on each side of the truck cant wait to take pics of it in action. O yeah i took a pic of a couple of white beauty's as well

And where do you get the plows? Is it like a boss or western or some other brand plow that you get a quick tach plate for? Or is it a specially made just for a machine?
