Around here and I am sure it varies. It all depends on how much weight you want to license the truck for. I have my 3500 and 5500 registered to 40K. It costs me about 250 a year for that kind a weight. Insurance could care less. My 1500 is registered at the min. weight which here is 16K I think and it was about 100. I think a lot will depend on your State as far as registration. If your not using your new truck commercially your rates will be lower. Remember that when it comes time to figure rates they look at everything including your credit rating. If you have any cleaning up to do, you will want to do that before you get the truck. The insurance rates on the diesel trucks is ridiculous even when everything is in order. The high replacement costs of the those trucks drives the higher premiums.

I would just say this when your looking. I am a big diesel guy. I bought my first gas truck (1500) this Spring in my adult life. Diesel will likely go back up here it got up to 4.60 a gallon and gas was about a dollar less. Unless your using the truck to really pull I would consider getting a gas. The new trucks with displacement on demand and 6 speed autos in the gas trucks are more economical. If you plan on pulling a lot its a different story. This last year my diesel trucks never left the yard unless they were tied to a trailer. I put 14K on that little half ton from April until now. Much cheaper to run, better mileage when compared to the newest diesels. They don't look as cool but they are more practical. It all comes down to what you want to do with it.

i wouldnt think insurance would be that much of a difference between them except for the value of them being higher?

heres the deal KSSS, with the new job i might be driving 150 miles a day...i need a 3/4 ton...so with that said i want fuel efficency

i was talking to two guy hunting, one owns a new 2500 gas Chevy and the other owns a new 2500 chevy diesel. The guy that owns the gas is getting 8-10MPG and the Diesel is getting 20+

so you figure the diesel is getting twice the MPG, therefore the only way to make the diesel non-economical is if the price of diesel in more then twice gas

it might cost me more at each fuel up...but in the long run i will be getting twice the milage on it, and have twice the life as a gas engine

I have an 08 Duramax CC short box and 13.5 is the best I can get out of it. I had both my 3500 and 5500 remapped. I am getting about 16 out of both of them now. I have not heard anyone hitting 20 since the LB7 Duramax trucks (01-03 model years).

If you need mileage and 3/4 ton and you want DMAX. I would look for an 03 model. You get the better interior, the LB7 is easy to chip and offered the best mileage. They also extended the warranty to 200K on the injectors. I have owned an 01,03,05,06 and 08 DMax in various configurations. The 03 2500 CCSB with the SLT interior was best of all of them. I could get 22 mpg with the stock size tires. They all have been trouble free.

I get 17.5 to 19.8 out of the 1500. I would not think about putting a trailer behind it though. Good for transportation and light towing, beyond that it is out of its league.

No, if you really want awesome fuel mileage get a 24valve 3rd gen cummins. Kinda hard to find, but they get awesome fuel mileage, and just old enough to sound awesome. I dont wanna start a brand war but when dad had his 98 dodge, only one out of 8 (96-2000) that was decked out to check fuel mileage with out math and he would get 20 just regular driving and he would drop down to 15 pulling the directional drill and if he was pulling the 331 he would drop to 18..

If your driving 150 miles a day you would want something with a car like ride so GM/Chev is your only option. Who would want to hear the body panels on a Dodge flap in the wind driving 150 miles a day

As for insurance it costs me 1200 dollars a year for my 03 F-450 but I'am under commercial insurance.

You may want maximum coverage if your putting on that kind of miles. Most insurance companies only cover you a certain amount of miles from your home. If you go past the X amount of distance you may not be covered.

As for the mileage your driving each day you may want to buy a brandnew truck. I wouldn't take long and you would have lots of miles racked up. A used truck may start giving you problems commuting that much.

it will be new...may be the only time in my life i can afford new...hopefully not, but you never know.

i am leaning towards the cummins because they are an inline 6, which in general means they get better mileage, and will hold up better...why else did Mack and CAT switch to inline?... I have read on cummins forum that unplugging the EGR will boost it another 3-4MPG and getting a DPF delete pipe for $500 will increase it much more as well

i will be test driving Dodge and GM right after new years...that way if i have to order it will be ready by the beggining of April...even though i am sure they will want to push on-lot inventory, we will see...i figured insurance wouldn't be that different...KSSS i didn't think of the replacement value though...

i also saw a beautiful Dodge 2500 Laramie 4x4 cummins black longbed that parked behind us at the sale the other day with a 2" level kit and 35" tires that got me thinking what i might do with my "signing bonus" HAHA
