I have a Toro model 724 with a Techumsa HSK-70 7hp engine. I started the unit up today and it ran for a few minutes and died while idling at high speed. I had to choke it in order to get it started. This went on for a few times. I attempted to adjust the high idle screw and got a change in engine smoothness while turning the screw in (lean) but very little adjustment while truning the high adjustment screw out (rich). I dropped the bowl and it is perfectly clean. I run the unit until the gas is empty every year and I always use Stabil in the gas when filling the unit up. Could this be an ethanol problem or am I due for a carb rebuild? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks...

Eric

It might be as simple as a clogged vent hole in the gas cap. Try loosening the cap momentarily when the problem occurs and see if it makes a difference.

Is the fuel FRESH? Ethanol absorbs water while being stored. IF the tank had any water from condensation, that could have been flushed to the carb bowl when filling the tank.
OTOH, fresh fuel should help absorb any water that was in the tank.

Also, check for spark immediately after it dies, Maybe the coil is on its last legs and fails as it starts to get warm?

Thanks for the reply Bill. I checked the vent on the gas cap and it was good. I also checked for spark and that was good. I opened the carb and gave it a full cleaning with Gumout carb cleaner and a pipe cleaner. The machine runs like a top now but I have to get a new carb bowl to body gasket. I also noticed that the drain assembly gasket on the bowl was seeping fuel Do you know a good vendor to get these gaskets? Thanks again

Go to page 9. It sounds like the main jet is partially blocked or the float level too high.

Another thing to check is the fuel flow. Remove fuel line from the carb and check it is flowing freely.

Get back to us on this.

Good luck, Phil :ukflag:/COLOR]

Phil, thank you so much for the on line manual. I took the carb apart and cleaned it really well. I put it back on the machine and everything is back to normal.
