how does the idea of going into the marines after college sound. i know that i will be away from the industry for some time but i can only see benefits rather than cons.

How about the Air Force?

You can also go in as an Officer, 20 years, retire at 43, start your lawn service and still get a paycheck once a month from the Armed Services.....become one of the KMA club members......

All the guys I know that retire young have the ''KISS MY A$$'' attitude..

I really wish I was one of those....I'll retire at 60...then start mowing full time...15 more years....

Time really flies when you get older, trust me, 20 years is nothing....and 43 is not to old to do what you want.....

Enjoy, and those that service, Thank you for my freedom!!!:usflag:

Ive been in navy for almost 10 years now. Its all what you make out of it. I wouldn't call it the best thing Ive done in life but I wouldn't call it the worst. If you have a degree I would recommend going in under some officer program in any of the branches. If i could do it all over again I would of went to college and came in Navy as a officer to be a pilot.

i would go in with a degree in horticulture or bussiness. I think being a officer would teach me the determination, leadership and confidence that makes a entrepenuer succesful. Im a few years away but have it all planned out.

I retired after 25 years from the AF and would do it again in a minute. Get the right job and assignment and you can mow while you're active. One of the guys that I work with from time to time is still in. It's nice to have a retirement to supplement your income, too :)

I have been in the AF for 17 years. I really enjoy it, when i retire that is all i am going to do is mow. I agree with VirginaLawnCare, if I had to do it over i would be an officer.

There are alot other places you can learn leadership, but that want make you a good leader. I have alot of friends in the army and other places in the military, but trust me they did not find leadership any more then they already had. By the way i am a leadership major. I dunno why you would want to go in that long you can go 4 years to complete your duty for your loans then if you like it stay if you dont get out.

i agree. theres plenty of other things u can do for leadership. thers plenty of classes in college u can take to learn how to do that. but i respect u for wanting to become one of the few and the proud

im already in every bussiness class in high school from finacial accounting to bussiness principles looking for something that will give me an edge while doing a great deed for the country that allows me to start my own bussiness and be succseful.

There is a huge difference in highschool then learning the real information in college. No offense but it sounds like you made up your mind. But do not be suprised if your heart want to be mowing and doing this.

i completly agree that school can only teach so much. i have spent many summers doing lanscape work for companies. but i think the military will give me the confidence to pursue my long list of goals for me to become succseful and enjoy the fruits of my labor.

Well i aint gonna talk ya out of it just be 100% positive cause there is no going back. I think you will be sadly mistaken if you think it will teach you that stuff. Going to college is a much better path even if you do military get them to pay for it. But most people will get stuck in the military. They get offered resigning bonuses they can't refuse. Right now for the army its a $22,000 sign bonus or something like that. But your signing your life away.

Great advice since several of my best friends are and i have been raised in one of the countries largest military bases. I never said it was bad but to think it teaches leadership and confidence i would disagree. Atleast not do it for that.

i just want everybody to know that i respect their opinion . i can see the pros and the cons. but i think a military lifestyle will help me gain the confidence and the drive that i will need to be succseful. i truly believe that the pain will only be temporary and the benefits will be lifelong.

I don't recall a college class that will require a person to make spur of the moment decisions and leadership that a military career will. Does the college degree teach you how to send someone in harms way? I don't think so. What the military does for young men and women is teach them core values that we live by. I will agree that college is an excellent option for some. Some don't have those options and the military does provide them tuition assistance.
Boonehockey, The benefits are life long for serving your country and your reasons for joining are admirable. It is entirely your decision in the end and don't let any opinions sway you one way or another. It is not signing your life away but joining something bigger than most American citizens can fathom. There is a huge commitment involved and an unbelievable amount of sacrifice. I will tell you after 17 years of honorable service, not all good, I wouldn't change anything and can't wait to reenlist again.
Good luck with whatever you decide and feel free to ask any of us that have or are serving this country and it's citizens any questions you come up with.

REally since he asked about it helping him in business not saving someones life?? lol I love the army and have nothing against like i said raised in a military town and alot of friends there that could not go to college. But i do know you do not just become a great leader becuase of the army much less a great business man. If you think that your sadly mistaken. I know lots of military men and women that know neither. The leadership style taught in the military is rarely seen in much of the corporate world today and is a not considered one great for business. Thank you i am a LEADERSHIP Major going to Get MASTERS in leadership. I know a little bit. I am not saying he is wrong for his decision he just should not go in to learn those. Thats the most ridiculus thing ever. ANd by the way thank you for serving!

I apologize, you are correct that not everyone learns leadership in the military, Mostly those that stay around for a while. While I cannot speak for the Army since I'm in the US Navy right now, we have our own ways of leadership education. And I commend you on your degree, something I could never achieve. My whole point was that there is no way a college education can teach someone to operate and make sound decisions under pressure like the military can. Good luck in the New Year.

And if there's people that know attention to detail, it is the U.S. Marine Corps.
