I am starting a lawn care service in Middle TN, Are there any books I should read, also what equipment would be perfect to start with, it will be a one man show, mostly 1acre and under yards. Any help on what equipment to get would be great. I am considering starting with a WB mower until I get going good, is this good or bad?

Walks are a good mower to start with, but a lot depends on your budget. You might consider a small Z such as a 48". As far as brands go, I'm a big Scag fan. I've had different mowers but now I'll only buy Scags. I like Stihl and RedMax on handhelds. You'll find many good brands of equipment out there, but make sure you deal with a good reputable dealer that understands the commercial business.Good luck.
If I could start over from scratch i would start with smaller neighborhood yards..... get as many of those in as small in area as you could. Start with as little investment as possible.
If you have a the money I would get a commercial 21" unless you just find an incredible deal on a walkbehind. You could get by with a homeowner grade 21" for a short time if you had to but dont even try to get by with homeowner grade hand helds. Invest in trimmers blowers and edgers such as redmax, sthil, echo. Echo that they sell at homedepot is probably the cheapest yet reliable unit you can get but I wouldnt rate it top notch. Echo Trimmer Runs $219 vs Redmax at $279.

We in this area know that noone is going to be very productive with only a 21" mower. I would only get 3 yards a day with a 21". I would have to let my townhouses go also. Couldn't imagine mowing those with a push mower. :dizzy: I would look at purchasing a good ztr on 12 mos same as cash. Pay it off in the 12 months and be done with it. That how I buy all my machines. That how I am looking at buying the 44" dually from BOP.(6 mos same as cash) Pay it off when the taxes come back.

A walk behind should be sufficient to start with. I would suggest Redmax handhelds and blowers, but that's just my preference. Good luck.

I would say just keep coming on here for the knowledge. There is alot of it on this site, as for the equipment just get a good 21" and Trimmer and go to town. Just really depends on how much you wanna sink into it. I would start out with little or no overhead at all if you can. Just my 02. Good luck!

Stay out of Mid TN... Lol i am just kidding where are starting at Nashville i assume??? Look at a decent Walk behind you can get one for under $1000 and a commerical trimmer and blower and maybe a hedge trimmer if you wanna offer that. An edger would not be bad either if your doing nicer jobs a 6x10 or 6x 12 trailer will do you fine

Why are you bumping?? WE gave you info and asked a question and you not answer?
Well when im talking about mowing with a 21" im talking about doing postage stamp yards with a lot size of 5k-10k before improvments.... Anything larger then that you def need a walkbehind or a zero turn rider.

What is a good comercial grade 21" and what might it run $$? I will be getting into the business this spring and have a 21" Toro from Lowes. I have some money to buy equipment. Looking at an Echo 210 (~$200), Stihl handheld, trailer and 21" mower.

my feeling is do not get a commerical 21" why for the $1000 you can go buy a really nice Walkbehind that is 36" or 48" which will give you much more ability to do more yards.... Stihl is expensive to start off with try out the Kawasaki great power, reliable and cheap!!! trailer you want need a big one at all. Blower depends on if you want a back pack or a handheld
