I heard on the news the state of California is on the verge of claiming bankruptsy. Then the rest of the USA isn't doing that great with the manufacturing sector taking a beating.
Hearing that California is in trouble isn't good news for B.C. . California buys lots of wood products from B.C. along with lots of sand and gravel.
I'am wondering what 2009 is going to bring. Most guys around here figure they won't be back to work till March maybe later than that.

Here's what you probably haven't heard yet......it's on page two or three. The bankers and hedge fund guys have got their bonus checks and have all bought one way tickets to the Camen Islands. They are sitting on the beach being served the drink of their choice, being served by bikini clad type females and laughing while the entire world washes amuck in their OTC derivative market melt down. Gravel Rat, watch this one.......here is the new area of concern ( ahead of the curve)........Pakistan and India. Watch them and report on that........if there ever was a situation that could turn us all upside down, that is it........your assignment is to tell us why that is so important :)

If you dont have work until March GO FISHING
And what exactly does this little tidbit of info have to do with heavy equipment? NOTHING! post this dribble in the miscellaneous threads forum next time please. We all read the papers and watch the news, don't bring us down with your sinking ship el capitano.

That's okay because Wisconsin is in secret talks(not anymore) to annex Cali. We will shut the entire state down and go to Cali starting October 15, spend the winter there and come back April 15.
Just think of the Happy Cow Cartel.

There won't be any heavy equipment working if there isn't any construction gonna happen.
The state of California buys millions of tons of gravel from B.C. there are mines that laid off 50 % of their crew because the sale of gravel to California stopped. California also buys millions of dollars worth of Western Red cedar products. If the gravel sales to the USA don't pick up I guess there will be lots of guys looking for a new job. With the lumber sales if they don't pick up more guys looking for a job.
Just wondering you hear more bad news on the TV from US and its not looking good for anybody. I want to know is the US in that bad of shape or is it being over glorified especially California and the Pacific Northwest area. If the construction in the PNW and California doesn't pick up then the resouce suppliers here in B.C. are not going to be working.
Infrastructure jobs would even help out because the mines on the B.C. coast can go back to supplying the sand and gravel for those projects. Like freeway rebuilds etc.
Everybody in Canada knows Ontario is screwed not much you can do there the automotive industry cut their own throats.
I have a job but alot of friends don't with them being laid off and not knowing when they are going back to work. The worst thing is if they run out of savings then say good bye to the house. The self-employeed guys are worse you can't collect un-employment insurance. The guys that can get at most 1000 dollars a month.
If the US economy is as bad as its portrayed on the news then the equipment in the woods and in the mines will be quiet for a long time. There is forestry contractors with millions of dollars worth of equipment sitting that hasn't been started or used in over a month and a half. The mines shut down production till mid January the equipment in the mines hasn't turned a wheel in a month.
Not doom and gloom just wondering if there is any change for the better. You think I think the Sky is falling the news you hear from the USA sounds bad.

Yeah, there must have been about a million people in line today at the soup kitchen. Right when I got to the front of the line they ran out of soup so I had to go beg for food in street. Then I heard the really bad news...they were giving IOU's at the welfare counter:laugh::laugh::dizzy:

California's problems started long before the banking crisis. Illegal Aliens, and I am not talking about the ones that go "eh", are killing the state's budget because of welfare, sanctuary cities, emergency room care, and freebie health care and job's programs. High taxes and absurd rules have forced business to close or relocate. Idiots for Mayors, Willie Brown comes to mind, create obstacles for normal business practices so business leave and jobs dry up. Californification has done it to herself. Real sad. Governor Terminator talked big but didn't do a whole heck of a lot and the out of control state legislatures have banned everything from weedeaters to gas cans making contractor's lives a nightmare. The only ones that benefit in California are those who don't work, won't work, and can't work because the public teat is out in the open and like a big, fat sow, waiting for the piglets to get their fill. Hope that draws a pretty picture.. Yeah Welfare, boo the working man. California leads the way...down the toilet!:usflag:

Most of you guys have a better view than those of us that live here. I live in a small town....3500 people...in a county that has maybe 37,000 about 60 miles East of Sacramento....... things here are bad and on top of that the GM...Toyota dealer just closed and rumors are that the Ford dealer is going to close also. So who knows but for sure it is not even close to good. In this county....Amador... they have a prison that seems to be doing well. Everyone is housed...fed 3 meals..get to exercise and study and generally play some games....you know lift weights....lots of baby sitters. And on top of all of that ....big court cases because we do not want another casino. 1 big casino now and seems like the plans are for 2 more...... You guys got the big picture....it is the smaller one that is really coming on strong. No fun for sure..... Ken

Interesting to note. Wellbuilt's attitude (which I agree with) is starting to take root and gain momentum from coast to coast and is becoming a topic of everyday conversation. Survival stores are having a banner year. Also interesting to note: more govt. and state funded "prisons" or holding facilities are being built in large quantity around the US.

For B.C. alot of business is done from Washington to Southern California so if California is going broke or gone broke thats not good news.
So it looks like its going to be a very slow year. The biggest problem is B.C. doesn't have enough construction market to use up the amount of wood and sand/gravel the province can produce so out of province sales is important.
If there is no out of province sales then mines and mills and other resouced based jobs are cut back. Like I said the resource industry is B.C.s biggest job market with the most un-employeed people currently.
Equipment dealers are going to take a severe beating with contractors giving equipment back that they can't afford anymore if it doesn't have work for it.
Going to be interesting for sure.

The only thing that is going to get us back on track is if the home mortgages are set at a rate people can afford. If people can stay in their houses then the market will slowly fix itself. All we can do is keep slowly chugging along until things get better and enjoy the next good years since this will all happen again in about 10 years.

Hi ben, i cant really agree There are lots of people that where bailed out 6 months ago and half 50% of them are back in foreclosure and the money is gone .The problem is that the banks are holding there cash until after we have hit dead bottom , so they can buy cheeeep and sell for a huge profit in the future . It costs me around 5000 a month to live plus business expense and i own every thing out right . I have a small loaned on my house. If my wife and my self had to get jobs we mite not take in 4000 a month that would leave us 1000 bucks short per month + food +fuel. If i had no savings i could not last long . I could sell stuff , but who would be buying ? Now most people here live hand to mouth and any house costs over 400gs That's a large note every month . Even if the mortgage is reduced by half and extended forever , how will you pay for it with no job ? I don't know the answers but these are some of my observations . I hate to sound like the GR . Ive had 3 jobs go south since Dec 15th these people are business owners that just have no business coming in ????? easy come easy go . Happy New year ! John

Yeah, I went to buy ammo for my weapons over the last two months. I went to this same outdoor store two times in the 2 month span. I always look at handguns when there. The first visit the wall was full of handgun models and multiple units in stock. I went back last week before Christmas and they had about six models in stock and down to one or two of those.
I asked the counter guys about the situation and he said they would get in about 4-5 a week and they generally sold the next day. Said it was the conspiring of the new President-Elect and the SHTF scenarios making handgun sales the top seller over the last 3 months.
They were out of ammo, I mean out for everything but 22's and shotguns or the odd ball stuff.

These are interesting times we are living in. These are the times when great fortunes are won and lost. These are the times to dig deep and be creative, go the extra mile to get the work and remain positive about what you are doing. These are also times to listen closely to any kind of opportunity that may come your way and remain flexible. For myself, I am beginning an advertising campaign for this coming spring, looking to purchase a dump truck in Jan. or Feb. , pick up some other equipment, go out and do the "meet and greet", look for the avenues where the money will be flowing for work. I think it will be in infrastructure, state jobs, city jobs (sidewalk replacement, curb and gutter, piping) and if you could find a way to get in to the government sponsored jobs - please share.

Local Sportsmans Warehouse has been out of pistols on a constant basis since the election and most gunshops will be out until the manufacturers tradeshow in January when orders for the current models will be placed. Hard to believe Smith & Wesson recorded a loss!!

Maybe we can turn this thread into another wish list?
I am thinking of a grapple/trash truck. I have 110 acres to bring brush back to and grind up on my own time and reclaim overgrazed/overused land. I have brought home upwards of 300 yards of chips in the last couple of years and used or given away all but 1 pile which will go to a friend soon. I find tons of uses for brush grindings, too. Wildlife and grasses love that stuff. That's on my wish list. I wanted a small dump truck but rather sub that out. I prefer being around trees and wood.

Lots of people in my area with one wish and its not loose everything they own. You spend too much money thinking a well moving economy based on hype was going to last you deserve what you get.
It has to be a little stressfull for a contractor when you haven't had any work in over a month the money has to be running out. No equipment repoed yet but its gotta be getting close to it. A excavator or a dump truck is pretty worthless right now when there isn't any jobs for it. I'am seeing guys trying to flog their brandnew dump truck there is no demand for them.
What can you do the problem is world wide every country is having finanacial problems some worse than others. All of North America is worse because we all live way beyond our means. The gov't spending way too much money, people over taxed and too many greedy people.
Get use to be un-employeed I know the guys in the construction industry here will be walking the un-employment line for atleast a year. Not much in the works for these guys with the realestate market at a standsill. The realestate market is flooded with new houses etc.
Tough it out and see what 2010 brings it will be the hardest year a excavation contractor will ever experience it maybe the toughest year anybody will ever experience.
This recession is a good eye opener and a test for peoples businesses. It might bring on early retirement for most people especially the older contractors they may be forced to retire because they have too much debt.
It will really thin out the people that jumped into the mini excavating business all of them thought they were going to strike it rich with a mini excavator.
Fun to see the people that are living way beyond their means sweating bullets. I guess they thought they would never loose their jobs oh well
What I like the most is the suckers that bought realestate when the prices were high. Now they are paying on houses that have dropped over 100,000 dollars in value some have dropped 200,000 dollars in value. The prices will never reach those levels again. So now you have a 30 year mortgage on a overpriced house and on todays market you could have bought it for 150 grand less :hammerhead:
The fear mongering that if you don't buy now you will never afford it backfired big time. The realestate bubble burst and let off a sound like a wet fart
Watching people get their house repoed will be fun, give it another couple months and their will be lots of repoed houses on the market. Pretty hard to afford a 2 grand a month mortgage payment with no job.

I wouldn't take any satisfaction in watching someone get foreclosed on. Even if the person was overextended, the banks share some of the responsibility for making the loans to unsuspecting consumers. It just isn't nice to gloat over other people's pain. Change your perspective and be a humanist and you will attract better karma..

No these people brought it on themselves. There was bidding wars on these houses people were buying paying way way too much for what they were buying. They knew they were sinking themselves into financial trouble digging their own grave.
The people I'am going to feel bad for is the guys my age with famillies they will be hit the hardest. The bought themselves a familly house at a high price because the baby boomers drove the house prices in the area up 200 percent.
It went from you can afford a house on a 40-50 grand a year job to you needed to make well over 100 grand a year to buy a house.
Anybody that bought into the buy now or your priced out of the market forever are going to get burned big time. The realestate flippers is what I'am really going to laugh at they are screwed big time. They might aswell claim personal bankruptsy.
The realestate bubble burst there has been maybe 4 house sold in 2008 out of 400 listings.
The house forclosures should start showing its ugly face this year with the job losses happening.
The whole economy was on selling realestate and not creating stable jobs that can support people 365 days a year it was all about selling their house for the highest price they could.
With just the start of 2009 today its going to be interesting.
You know people are not spending any money because New Years eve parties were a bust this year. The events that were put on were half full or less.

It's slow down here, but it was slow a year and a half before everyone else felt it slow down, and it'll take even longer to get back. But normal here is still slow compared to other places.
The biggest thing that hurt us here were builders over extending themselves, I know of 2 big builders goin bankrupt, and 1 that by the time he gets done with all these lawsuits he either will be bankrupt or wont have enough left to go forward. I hate that that is happening to those 3, but the last one I mentioned was an a$$ and a cheapskape who did whatever he could to get the most money out of the cheapest things. The way I look at it with him is you can only be an a$$hole to people for so long before it comesback to bite you in the a$$.
Many of the builders here who are still holding on have houses that have had 2 birthdays already, if that tells you how long its been slow here. But there are other builders who are building houses and actually selling them. I dont know how but they are doing it...

Sounds like here, to steal a quote from my father, "when the U.S. has a recession we don't know the difference because we (Vermonter's) are always in a recession"

For me 07 was not a good year. 08 was better, close to 06.

Lets hope his mom doesn't lose her job, GR will be without internet access.
I think I make enough money to pay the 40 bucks a month for my internet. I just can't afford the 1500 dollars a month rent people charge here. Sucks when you only make 2400 dollars a month but hey I'am working and 60% of the employeed people in the area are not. The only people working are the ones in the service industries like the grocery store.
If I still worked for the excavation contractors I would be making no money and laid off like the rest of them. These guys don't know when they are going back to work there just isn't anything for them to do. The snow isn't helping but the realestate is so dead the new residential construction the same.
If the work continues the way it is then people will be living on the street can't pay rent or your mortgage payments with no money.
Oh well I'am employeed I made the choice of having a gauranteed job but make 1000-2000 dollars a month less if I worked in construction.
All you can do is wait and see what happens.
Oh ya I heard on the news that the USA is sinking deeper into a recession your new president didn't have much good news :dizzy:
