I looked at trailer tool boxes and could not find one that would work on my trailer, got tired of the box inside the trailer and having to move move crap to get to it, or taking to much stuff out and having to toss it into the truck....so this is what I came up with....

Why not a tounge box, like from TSC, wouldnt that fit?

Looks like it works to me. I need to do something like that.

The brace comes down the center, and I was told a tongue box would not work, so for $15.00 did it this way...

Oh, I didnt even notice the brace.. No a tounge box wouldnt have worked..

I would turn it around. Over time, wind will wear that plastic latch out and nex thing you know the lid will fly open going down the road.

Innovative....Not a bad idea though.

What about water? Like I said I want to do the same, but won't it get wet or stuff get stolen out of it at night? Or does it come off? Not giving you a hard time, just curious.

It has two metal latches, plus a location to lock it, the best part was the cutting to fit.....notice what I used as bracing so it will never blow off......

Should serve its purpose....

Nice, thanks for the help!

I needed a place for the straps/gloves small tools, but the whole reason I needed it was for the tongue lock, it always ended up in my truck bed, or the trailer, now I just unlock it and toss it into the box, if it doesn't hold up, I pull it off and get a metal one and paint it black...

I had an ammo can in the trailer, but it was a bad place, no matter where I moved it....

I saw this at Wally world on sale $15.99...

How big is the box?

Toy2
01-03-2009, 06:29 PM
Its 22'' long, by 12'' wide, by 10'' tall.

I put some straps and gloves, but I need to add more to it, looks empty...LOL!!!:)

Couldn't have that plastic box unattended in our area they would rip it right off. Yes even in the daylight at job site tools are worth more at pawn shops than most other stuff. We use a smaller steel box with critical tools for field only and keep it in the truck but take it out each nite because again they will break windows to get to tools.

Wow, I'm glad my area is secure, why not a truck tool box? My sister got me a box very similar to that for x-mas but I am using it to keep some minor irrigation supplies in when I get the jobs, so its still empty right now.

Now that is pretty, sad, maybe a few shotgun blasts in the air would be enough to stop that crap.....I really don't have to worry that much around here, trailer is always behind a gate at night....

Like I said in another thread, I don't think I'd want to be in that market !!

Thats what I will be adding to my trailer in the spring!

Anyone notice my homemade brackets inside my box?

Yes, they are used edger blades, I welded flat washers to them and sprayed them black, so that box would have to be broken in a hundred places to blow out......

Also this box has removable trays on top, I pop riveted them to keep them in place....:usflag:

Yes yes, noticed the edger blades! Was coming down to comment but you couldn't wait for someone to notice

Tool box looks like it will work. Over time it will probably deteriate in the sun, and the first time someone uses it as a step to get into the truck or trailer it may not fare to well. Sure not going to fall off on its own!

My trailer has the same dumb brace on the tounge like yours So I just use the tounge for a place to store shovels and a rake. I put a side-body L shaped box on the top rail over the wheelwell of my trailer. Lots more room...

Your right, I'm sure the Texas sun will be the death of it, I'll wait for a metal box to go on sale at HF and jump on it.

I have the concept down, so it sould go smooth on a replacement.....my little HF welder has come in handy, I also had to weld the crank handle, it was getting loose, so I added some tacks and sprayed it black......

Okay folks, update on my so called "project".......we had a pretty good rain storm yesterday with temps reaching the freezing mark.....and a decent rain this morning.....

Opened up my box to find a inch of water.....WTF....it was dripping down where the handle is moulded into the box......

I took it off and found an ammo box that fits perfect, plus its weather tight, I might have to modify something to make it lock, but not to worried about it....

Ammo box looks better than the plastic one...

Lesson learned, don't use plastic boxes for extreme use...:hammerhead:

Whenever you get that finished, post some updated pics. I'd like to see it.

Will get pictures up ASAP, it really does look better, no cutting on the box, fits perfect, plus I stood on it without putting a dent on it......LOL!!!

I thought about spraying it black, not sure, kinda like army green....

Okay I took pics of the new install, box is about 20''L X 5'' wide....I'm guessing about 10'' tall...

I will put a tape on tomorrow....

How big is the new box?

Okay, went out with a tape:

18'' long
6''wide
9.5'' high/tall

Fits perfect between the crank, and the extra brace...

Nice man. It looks great. You should be good to go with that setup.

I would fabricate a mount in the trailer at the front. The box would be suspended (or sitting on sort of a shelf) so that no floor space would be sacrificed. There is ALWAYS something that could go under the box, as well.

Very clever! I'll be doing that to my trailer with a small Chraftsman tool box.

i have that same dummy center brace. anyone here removed it before? does it really hold any weight?

Would it be ok, to REMOVE that center brace, and put it back on flat?

cause i really really want a box like this

that brace is actually not a dummy brace. It is a cantilever and creates alot of leverage and structural integrity. Having it flat is essentially like not having nothing at all. these braces are more commonly found on trailers that are not built with a wrapped tongue. By the looks of your trailer tongue (Tom Tom), it looks like your trailer may very well have a wrapped tongue, but we can't tell from the front...have to see it from the side. I have an 18 ft. that is built with this brace, and I wouldn't even think of removing this brace at that point on the trailer - especially just for the sake of creatng room for a toolbox. As I said, I would certainly make room IN the trailer for a toolbox...whether it be elevated, or whatever. there is PLENTY of room on a trailer, if it is configured and organized right. I added 30 sq. ft. to my trailer just with shelves alone.

Toy2

You could always cut the bottom of that box to slip over the brace, but agree with Runner......do not remove it......

I think that is a great place to mount a toolbox. I have one mounted there as well. I got mine from Northern Tool and it also serves as a great workbench with the top closed. That is why I took the handle off.

Update on ammo box, I made a bracket to add to the look and protect it, this thing is tough, anyway here is the updated look...now it looks like it belongs on the trailer

Thanks, my welding skills are getting better everyday, I might have to upgrade from my HF welder to a better one, so far its done what I needed it to do, no issues.

Universal Coupler Lock

Part Number: H0UTL100
Fulton Universal Trailer Coupler Lock

Price: $30.95

I got mine at the trailer supply house, but I think I saw them at Home Depot, I painted it red, they come in yellow, but it fades fast.
