Why do I have so much string algae this winter? does it have something to do with the warm weather?

It most likely is do to the warm weather that is happening. String algae can, and does grow in pretty cold water. The plants that soak up those extra nutrients in the summer are still dormant so all those nutrients that got into the pond over the winter (leaves, debris, etc...) are just feeding the algae. Once the water temperature starts getting over 50° start adding the bacteria. The string algae will start to go down.

You can also do a spring cleanout, and start with fresh water for the season. While this is not necessary, we do recommend it.
