The pull start won't pull . I took apart the motor and cleaned the carbon from the piston head and the ring channel. I gota new ring and put it back together. Very hard to re-install piston into cylinder. the things turns but it is very tight. Should I have honed the cylinder ? possible wrong ring? I used the A101000000 part as recomended on the web site however I was not sure of the series # only one other part listed for a ring was A1010090

Yes, anytime a piston is pulled and rings are replaced you are supposed to re-hone the cylinder.

What condition was the piston in? It should be like new, very smooth and no score marks on it.
Did you fit the rings in the pegs in the piston groove ok? Did you check the size of the new rings in the bore prior to fitting?
Did you lightly lube the rings with oil when fitting?
Good luck, Phil

yes to all the above. I mainly wanted to see what caused the lock up. I was expecting worse conditions. The piston was only carbon fouled and i believe the cause of lockup was depostis built up on the ring grove preventing flex in the ring. I will start over another day and see what happens. I did polish the cylinder with steel wool but it was still tight.

Best to pull it apart. As you loosen the cylinder try turning the engine to see if it eases up.
Good luck, Phil :ukflag:

I just got finished on a 261......don't hone the cyclinder because Echo has a surface coating and if you go thru that the unit will wear out quickly. I am surprised that when it locked and you drove the piston out that no damage occurred. Usually there will be on groove and that will need to be smoothed down with sand cloth. I put straight two cycle oil on all surfaces on reassembly. Those head should go on easy so something must be wrong. I would look to be sure the groove is absolutely clean.

well , what an idiot I am ! Idecided to give it another look . took the motor off and brought it inside and took it apart again..... I had the ring on upside down. Put it back together and fired it up! I need to adjust the gap between the ignition and the magneto but that will wait for warmer weather. I believe the culprit to be buildup in the ring grove to cause it to lock up . As I recall it became harder to pull and ran at less rpm as it moved to lockup

Job well done, get y'self a beer.
Set the flywheel to coil gap using a business card. Loosen coil, slide in b/card. Rotate flywheel so magnets grab card. Tighten coil, remove card and off yer go.
It's ok, we all f' up now and then:hammerhead:
Good luck, Phil
