The higher your volume the better the rates, but for higher volumes we're talking
100,000+ transactions a month or some such bs...

So what I'm saying is that 3% $40 rate isn't far off for small guys, you might
find a little cheaper by shopping around a lot but it's just trading features...

Some will give you unlimited this, others will throw in free that, just like with these
online stock traders and every other such thing there's like 50 different flavors
but in the end it's all the same darn thing.

It's the reason why I don't offer cc's, it just burns me that WE the business owners are
expected to carry yet another cost for the convenience of the customer... Which, don't
get me wrong but after we get beat around on the price in the first place what's left?
Just one more middleman, one more nickel and dime charge.

I use paypal merchant services. Pretty reasonable rates. I just add on a $2.00 "processing fee" to any CC payments online. It shows up in the "Taxes" area when they enter in their CC info. No complaints yet.

You can do better on the rates. Go to your bank and see what they'll do.

Another way to look at it... If you pay something like $0.30 + 2.5% per transaction, it ends up being about the same price and paying for an envelope, stamp, paper, and that takes more time... Plus, the most important thing of all, if you accept credit cards you get paid a lot faster, and on time every month. Plus some clients like it because they get air miles and other rewards for using their CC, plus they don't have to jack with paying another bill every month.

Plus, since your clients aren't paying you directly every month, they don't have that negative (damn I just had to pay that bill) feeling when you talk to them next.

We use paypal. works out great, we just let our money sit in the account and we have debit cards that pull off that account, you earn interest and when you use the card you get 1% back for us that turns into around 1500 per year.

I was set up through my bank through Elavon. Then Evalon jacked up my rates. I switched to Costco./Elavon As a Costco Executive member ($100 a year) They knocked $20 a month($240 a year) off my base fee, and reduced my %.

No, they do NOT have to have a paypal account. It will ask you if you DO have an account, but there is a place to click that will take them to a webpage where they just enter their card info and address. Check it out on my website. http://www.lawnsinorder.net

Pay pal also has virtual terminal, where if someone stops by your yard/shop and wants to buy something you can enter there card info in just like a normal store. We are going to add tthis in a few months when we start selling mulch again

Just out of curiosity, what do you do as a non-profit lawn care company?

seems like a good idea, maybe for a small fee extra we can add this. we would have to question our customer base first of course to see if it would be a good move, but more than likely it is. goo dinfo

My wife works at U.S. bank and their service is pretty good. It runs like $30 a month at like 3% and you can run it through your website or over the phone.

Just a heads up :waving:
thats a good way to lose your ability to accept Visa and Mastercard.
Read the terms of service. you cannot charge a fee to the card holder if you you choose to accept those cards. Not saying its right but they will fine you for it. they have a lot of strange things like that in their terms. Some places have a minimum you must spend, say like $5 minimum to use your card. that is also against their terms of service. If you agree to accept them then you must accept them for any amount.
This one shocked me, Merchants that accept Visa / Mastercard are not allowed to ask for ID to verify the identiyy of the card user. The merchant can be fined. Unfortunately they don't go after the big merchants they go after the small guys like you. if you go to either one of their sites you will see an area for customers to complain and you can see what I'm talking about.

Heres a direct link the the Report a Merchant/Retailer Violation page for Mastercard. You'll see at the bottom of the form is an option to choose the violations I listed.

WOW...I did NOT realize that. So even like these local Mom and Pop stores that I go to have signs that say say a minimum of $5 purchase are in violation too??? Wow, that's crazy....I see things like that everywhere...and I know someone who was recently asked to show a second form of ID because the machine was not accepting his card for some reason. The machine was saying it was a stolen card (when it obviously wasn't) so they cut up his card with scissors right in front of him....he was sooo po'd he called the cops. Anyways, Thanks so much for the info....Guess I'll stop accepting CC payments for now....they didn't make much of a difference anyways.

Thanks again for looking out for me, I appreciate it.

this is true, you cant charge a person more for accepting cc or paypal. I had some stuff listed on ebay once, they took it off because I stated I would charge more for paypal or cc.
Always read the fine print, that no one reads....
