had to change the fuel & water separator on the JD 317, that thing is a PITA. Couldn't get the filter off, then it finally came off, put it on, then it wouldn't start. Why didn't they use a spin on filter instead of that damn locking thing they have?

I agree I have a 322 and I hate that stupid filter!

After i'm going to get rid of that and some how mount a normal spin on filter. This morning it would not start with out starting fluid, it ALWAYS starts no problem at these temps, this morning was warmer than the last week. It wouldn't start yesterday, so i replaced the fuel&water filter, and got it started. I don't know why it isn't starting, all filters are about new, it turns over like it should, glow plugs working, no codes. I'll get some diesel additive and see if that helps

If you let your fuel level get too low it could have jelled up, or you might have gotten air in your lines. You might need to prime it. If it won't start after you prime it and have all of the bubbles out of the fuel, have someone continue to prime it while you try to start it. I'm guessing air in the lines.

You also might want to change the inline fuel filter as well, and make sure the hose clamps aren't pinching the filter if you have the old style plastic kind. They did away with them and switched to metal filters.

I haven't had any problems with the locking filter/separater. No tools necessary and it's easy to get to. If this was the first time you've changed it, it might have just seized up.

All of a sudden you like bobcat better? You said you rather have a deere over a bobcat a few months ago

I think so  So how is the s160 holding up. Tell me how much easier the bobcat is to maintenance then the deere:)

Is it just me or is this cold weather bringing out the worst in fuel? I went through four fuel filters in less than 16 hours of operation a couple weeks ago, they kept plugging with water. It was warm enough to not be gelled I think, well above freezing. Had some problems like that last winter too. Discovered the gas station I was fueling up at has water in the tank. I found one good clean source for diesel in the last two months; problem is that place is four hours from home.

All the fuel companies empty there tanks out this time of year ( or before ) to the distributors along with all the year in water and crud:hammerhead:Why not sell $4(less now) watermixed in raises there profits.

How many million gallons of water do you think they sell us a year???? We don't even know it until cold weather hits.Too late:cry:

They aren't dumb !!!!!! pass it on to the distributors and them on to the customers, who in turn get to replace filters and add fuel conditioners:).

The fuel companys don't want to have to deal with the headaches. It happens every fall (winter)this time of year around this area, but sounds like a country wide thing also!!!!:usflag:

The s-160 is holding up great. Not one problem with it yet, hope it stays this way. Its been -25 here for a week, never failed to start. And yes the filters are easier to change on the Bobcat.

Yeah, I probably spent over $100 in filters and fuel treatments in a 2 day period. I was not a happy camper.

My gloves still stink from all the fuel I got on them. At least the Bobcats are pretty easy to get back in service after a filter change. There's a bleeder on top of the filter so you can purge it to there, then close that and open a little valve up by the injection pump and squeeze the primer bulb another half dozen times till it feels firm, and you're ready to go... until the filter plugs up again, anyway.

Yes very true, its really easy to change the fuel filter and get it running again, the john deere is a different story

Well it wouldn't start again today, there must be a fuel line with a small hole in it, letting the fuel drain back and when you go to start it, it has no fuel
