Hi, I have an old Gravely walk behind Pro 50. The Peerless 700-008 transmission leaks like crazy. It works perfectly, except it pours oil/grease all over the mower. Does anyone know how to reseal it? I read somewhere you are supposed to silicone the lid to the body--but I'm not sure if I need bearings, O-rings, etc. PLEASE HELP!!!

I usually refrain from answering questions I am not sure about but since it has been a few days,,
To the best of my memory there is no seals or gaskets in a Peerless. There may be an O-ring on the input shaft?? but thats it. You are correct that the case half "gasket" is silicone. In my experiance when one of them leaks much from any of the shafts it is because of wear, over filling or wrong grease. If you are not using bentonite (spelling likely off there) grease that is likely at least part of your problem, about any place that sells commercial walk behinds will have it, ask for Peerless lube, should be in a sqeeze tube. You are supposed to take it off the unit, flush and refill with X amount per lube chart. No check levels that I have ever been made aware of. It has also been my experiance that if it needs anything more than vary basic minor repair parts you might as well just purchase another one, cost vs cost

I agree with the replacement over repair during the season. But it is the off season so he needs something to do. They sell a repair book showing all the torque specs and such (I have one on my shelf). This may be the best thing for you to get. After that you should be able to take it apart and fix it or decide it's worn enough to get a new one.

The most common problem with a Peerless 700-008 transmission is it dosnt work anymore, I would check the case half bolts and make sure they are tight. Bentonite grease is so pasty/thick it would not leak unless it was exsposed to high tempatures, like running your mower in transportation mode over a long distance.

First things first, if you take that cover off be EXTREMELY careful when re-tightening the bolts!!!
The case is made of aluminum and it strips easy!
Do NOT use an air or electric powered tool to re-assemble it!
Best thing to do is just snug them down, don't tighten them up hard.
On the other hand, once you strip one you will know this :p
You'll want to read that manual, there is a specific automotive type of gasket
in a tube (sorry, lack of better words) that can be used but the procedure has
to be followed or the leak will continue.
But yes, they can be resealed.

Dang, I paid money for that exact manual.
And yes you need that grease.

Kind of thought I would chime in since I just tore my peerless apart yesterday. If it is leaking through the bottom onto a pulley then there are two pressed in bearings one with a seal and one without, then there is a flat washer with a thrust bearing and then another flat washer on top of that. It sounds a lot worse than it is but it is hard to get the old bearings out. To do this you have to remove the trans and disassemble, check pinion bearing while you are there. Pull pinion and all of the above mentioned bearing are under it. Hope that helps some.
