If you talking about a stick edger, I have always found it easier to walk backwards along the walkway when I'm edging. It seems to give me a cleaner edge. I really don't know if anybody else does this or not. Also, go slow at first and try to keep the blade from hitting the concrete as much as possible. And wear safety glasses always.

Exactly what jsw said. Just try not to hit the concrete and tear it up or the blade on your edger. I plan to buy a stick edger soon too. Probably right before spring or shortly there after.
If walking backwards to edge with a stick edger: is there an advantage to using a straight-shaft vs curved-shaft edger - because they spin in opposite directions?

They are very easy to use...and I have used it walking backwards, but usually only when the edge is very bad and needs some extra work.

All string-trimmers are like this to the best of my knowledge. Straight-shaft spin CounterCW and curved-shaft spin CW.
Am asking the above question cuz I've never used a stick edger. I can get a nice clean edge with a straight-shaft string trimmer walking backwards while edging...though if severly overgrown it'll take a few weeks to accomplish.
I've not yet invested into dedicated equipment like a stick-edger or wheeled edger as they are not an everyday item...though they certainly have their attributes. I find my string trimmer (Redmax) to be very useful...it does it all at this point.
So, since I'm sick of string-trimmer edging while walking backwards - which stick-edger will do the best job while walking forwards? A straight-shaft or curved-shaft? Am gonna guess that the straight-shafted ones have more power and are likely the way to go either way...but that's just my guess.

I've used both and personally prefer the straight shaft edgers as well as string trimmers.

Curved shaft's useualy are closer to the ground, depending on how tall you are, Or how long your arms are, you will find yourself bent over, this tends to put a strain on one's back used for long periods of time....
if your going to purchase, get a stright shaft.

i agree with bohiaa ... im 6-1 n i much prefer a straight shaft edger to the curved shaft ones ... i also find that a straight shaft edger is easier to manuver along bed edges than a curved shaft.
as for the operational aspects ... i walk forward and let the weight of the edger lean against the turf a little ... this will give you a nice clean appearance ... otherwise you will notice that the very top of the grass seems to form a little outward canopy over time and wont look as clean.
one word of caution is you'll want to make sure that you dont have any irrigation, invisible fencing, or conduits running just below the surface in your landscape beds ... learned this one the hard way
