The best pricing method is $1 per minute. So $60 per hour. if you have a yard that will take you 45 minutes, then charge $45. now with that said i also have a minimum price of $40 if a yard only takes me 30 minutes to do i still have to recoupe some of my drive time and fuel.

You need to charge by the job. That way when you get a crew you can really start to make some money.

you dont wanna charge by the job. you wanna charge by the hour!!!! i cut a townhome, i have 2 other guys with me. i charge so much for each mower by the hour. i have made he double hockey sticks of lot more money by the hour. when i first started out i would charge by the job. that came back to bite me in the azz. i would do a cleanup on a resi and figured it would take an hour so i charge how ever much. after that i started charging by the hour and made alot more money!!!!!:hammerhead:

Whether you charge by the job or by the hour it is very important to know what your costs are per job and per hour. Income - expense = profit . That is over simplified but don't over look it.
If you want to know what to charge, figure how much you want to earn after your expenses and then accurately figure out your expenses. Then monitor these numbers on a regular basis and adjust them as needed.

what do you charge for a hour
I charge $60 an hour for my time and $30 an hour for my workers. I'm not going to say that I always get exactly that, but it works for me.

This question is so redundant. By the hour or by the job? What are you talking about?
If you do it by the hour, you're going to get paid for how long you are out on the job and that is your price.
If you charge by the job, you're going to estimate the job on how long it is going to take you, aka, by the hour....
Either way, no one can tell you how to charge, you have to look at your OWN expenses and determine how much YOUR time is worth, not others.
You might be a slow poke behind a mower and what someone does in an hour for $60 might take you 80 minutes. Dont think you're going to get a lot of customers for the same size job for $80 just because you're slow.
Think about it.

I beleive this is key
if you do not know your operating cost you could end up shooting yourself in the foot

residential by the job, average of 35$.
Commercial is by the hour of 95$ an hour and 16$ per bag of deicer.
even if your doing residentials try to aim for around 100$ per hr.

I get what is being said but what I don't get is when you first show up to a new yard and they want an estiment how do you implement the $1 per minute before you can mow the yard? I hope this is clear what im asking.

That's why I usually charge by the yard. It comes with experience. You need to evaluate yourself and know how fast you can do it, and then charge by that amount.
When you come to the yard, you need to notice any obstacles. Trees, sidewalks, driveways, ditches, and fences all make your job longer. Take everything into consideration when charging.
